My Evidence #1

A study from SmartyPants, a company that studies the digital behavior of kids ages 6-12, concluded that "81 percent of 6- to 8-year-olds use YouTube, as well as 76 percent of 9- to 12-year-olds." (Von Groove pg. 2).

My Hook

As our ever-changing society creates more and more technological conveniences, the children of today are changing their own mannerisms as well.

Hook *set the scene *give background *gain confidence

As the world continues to modernize every day, children are beginning to enjoy new technologies that were not previously available to the youth of the past.

Evidence #1 *Ask yourself: What FACTUAL information does the author give to support his/her claim? *Evidence can be given in statistics, facts, paraphrased facts or quotations.

Children love these two streaming apps because "there is always something to watch," ranging from videos that are funny and educational to shows that have a continuing story (Newsela Staff, paragraph 9).

Summary of 2 points from above *Ask yourself: How can I summarize evidence #1 and #2 succinctly in a way that further supports the thesis?

Clearly, handheld devices are gaining popularity for kids to watch their favorite shows and entertain themselves when compared to cable TV.

Claim #1 *Ask yourself: What does the author claim? *A claim persuades, argues, convinces, proves or provocatively suggests. **The author claims, says, states, includes, etc.

First, in order to watch TV, children have to find out what time their favorite shows are on, or they have to search for long periods of time to find something enjoyable to watch.

Elaboration #1 *Ask yourself: How does the author further explain the evidence? Or, how can I further explain the point the author is trying to make? *Elaboration can be analysis, commentary, explanation

However, with a smartphone, tablet, or other handheld device, kids have the ability to watch videos on demand whenever they choose.

My Claim #2

Evidence #2 *Ask yourself: What FACTUAL information does the author give to support his/her claim? *Evidence can be given in statistics, facts, paraphrased facts or quotations.

Often, boys tend to enjoy watching "video-game commentators and comedians," and although girls have slightly different tastes, "they still prefer internet video" over cable TV (Newsela Staff, paragraphs 14-15).

Secondly, the plethora of categorized videos online appeal to children of all ages and to both boys and girls.

My Evidence #2

Terrence Burke of KidSay believes that "there is a massive movement underway, with kids shifting away from Cable TV. The future is about videos being watched on handheld devices." (Von Groove pg. 1).

My Thesis Statement

The author states that children of today are being drawn away from the conventional tradition of Cable TV and turning towards their smartphones for their TV-watching pleasure.

My Elaboration #2

There are so many attractions to these miniature super-computers. For example, they can go almost anywhere and hardly take up any room. They can also come up with thousands of answers for any question in a few seconds. With these machines, almost anything is possible.

Elaboration #2 *Ask yourself: How does the author further explain the evidence? Or, how can I further explain the point the author is trying to make? *Elaboration can be analysis, commentary, explanation

There are so many different videos and shows to watch online that any child, no matter what the age, can find something that they enjoy, whether it be off of Netflix, Youtube, or any other of the thousands of other apps available to smartphone or tablet owners.

My Elaboration #1

These apps offer such a wide variety of television for kids that it almost makes waiting a whole week until you can see your favorite TV show, primitive and pointless.

My Re-visit the Thesis Statement

These days, smartphones are becoming the new way to watch videos and Cable TV is becoming a thing of the past.

My Claim #1

To begin, the author asserts that out of all of the services that provide TV programs and movies, "YouTube and Netflix wins with kids" (Von Groove pg. 2).

Conclusion (Call to action) *Ask yourself: How can I redirect the reader to think about the next logical thought on the topic?

With all these great benefits to handheld devices, will TV's soon go out of style?

Re-visit the Thesis Statement *Ask yourself: How can I echo the hook in the introduction to bring the reader full circle?

With great apps like Netflix and Youtube available to everybody, it has never been easier for these children to chose what they want to watch and for how long they get to watch it.

My Conclusion (Call to action)

With handheld TV watching devices coming into a new point of view, clearly Cable TV will fade into the past, no longer needed, but not forgotten.

Thesis Statement *Ask yourself: After reading the entire text, what is the author main point? *Broad statement here *In a 3 paragraph there is NO NEED for thesis clarification or main evidence in the thesis.

the author asserts that youth prefer to watch videos on handheld devices instead of on a television.
