Petrobras Earnings Jump on Oil Rally and Brazil's Water Crisis Peter Millard and Mariana Durao, Bloomberg News (Bloomberg) -- Brazil's state-controlled oil company saw its earnings surge in the second quarter, thanks to a rally in crude prices and a hydropower crunch in Brazil that boosted electricity demand. Since late last year, Petrobras has sold more fuel oil domestically and increased output at its own thermal power plants, part of a wider policy in Brazil to conserve water levels at hydroelectric dams and avert power outages. Though the energy and power division at Petroleo Brasileiro SA, as the company is formally known, represents a fraction of overall revenue, it was a standout. Electricity generation more than tripled in the second quarter from a year ago. Petrobras also got a boost from this year's oil-price rebound, which has delivered robust earnings to energy giants, many of which are printing as much profit as before the pandemic. As a result, many of Petrobras's U.S. and European peers have been using the cash to boost dividends and slash debt. It's a stunning turnaround for an industry that was on the ropes a year ago amid a pandemic-induced price crash. Also Read: Big Oil Shows Confidence The Era of Large Profits Is Back Petrobras reported 42.86 billion reais ($8.3 billion) of net income, up from 1.17 billion in the first quarter. Thanks to the strong results, the company said it will bring forward shareholder payouts of 31.6 billion reais for this year. Petrobras continues to increase oil output from the so-called pre-salt region that holds its largest and most profitable discoveries. A 180,000-barrel-a-day production vessel is expected to start this month and gradually ramp up at the Sepia field. This and other new units allow Petrobras to continue boosting output at ultra-deep fields, and compensate for production it has lost due to asset sales and natural declines at legacy fields. Petrobras continued to slash what was once the biggest debt load of any publicly traded oil company, which stood at $63.7 billion at the end of the second quarter. The company has vowed to increase dividend payments when it brings total debt below $60 billion, a target it expects to achieve next year. The ongoing divestment program has helped Petrobras trim debt. It has raised $2.8 billion from selling assets for the year through Aug. 3. It was the first quarter under the management of Chief Executive Officer Joaquim Silva e Luna, a former general who took over in April following a row between President Jair Bolsonaro and the previous CEO about rising diesel prices. Luna has pledged to avoid fuel subsidies and continue with Petrobras's current business plan, which calls for divesting assets including refineries to focus on its most profitable projects in the pre-salt. Investors are waiting to see how strongly Luna will defend Petrobras from political intervention. The company recently denied a claim from Bolsonaro that it had earmarked 3 billion reais to subsidize cooking gas for families in need.

When was the last time you read a book or a substantial magazine article? Do your daily reading habits center around tweets, Facebook updates, or the direction on your instant oatmeal packt? If you are one of the countless people who don't make it a habit of reading regularly, you might be missing out? Reading has a significant number of benefits, and just a few befits of reading are listed below. 1. Mental Stimulation Studies have shown that being mentally stimulated can slow the progress of, or possibly even prevent Alzheimer's and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power. Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy, so the phrase "use it or lose it" is particularly apt when it comes to your mind. Doing puzzles and playing games such as chess have also been found to be helpful with cognitive stimulation. S2. Stress Reduction No matter how much stress you have at work, in your personal relationships, or in countless other issues faced in daily life, it all just slips away when you lose yourself in a great story. A well-written novel can transport you to other realms., while an engaging article will distract you and keep you in the present moment, letting tensions drain away and allowing you to relax. 3. Knowledge Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might come in handy. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to tackle any challenges you'll ever face. Additionally, here's a bit of food for thought? Should you ever find yourself in dire circumstances/in a pickle remember that although you might lose everything else - your job, your possessions, your money, even your health, knowledge can never be taken from you. 4. Vocabulary Expansion Does this go with the above topic? The more you read, the more words you gain exposure to, and they'll inevitably make their into your everyday vocabulary. Being articulate and well-spoken is of great help in any profession, and knowing that you can speak to higher-ups with self-confidence can be an enormous boost to your self-esteem. It could even aid/help in your career, and those who are well-read, well-spoken, and knowledgeable on a variety of topics tend to get promotions more quickly (and more often) than those with smaller vocabulary and lack of awareness of literature, scient breakthroughs, and global events. Reading books is also vital for learning new languages, and non-native speakers gain exposure to words used in context, which will ameliorate their own speaking and wring fluency. 5. Memory Improvement When you read a book, you have to remember an assortment/a number of characters, their backgrounds, ambitions, history, and nuances, as well as the various arcs and subplots that weave their way through the story. That's a fair bit to remember, but our brains are marvelous things and can remember these things with relative ease. Amazingly enough, every new memory you create forges new synapses (brain pathways) and strengthens existing ones, which assists in short-term memory recall as well as stabilizing moods, How cool is that? Have they made any friends? 6. Strong Analytical Thinking Skills Have you ever read an amazing mystery novel, and solved the mystery yourself before finishing the book? If so, you were able to put critical and analytical thinking to work by taking note of all the details provided and sorting them out to determine "whodunnit". The same ability to analyze details also comes in handy when it comes to critiquing the plot? Determining whether it was well-written, etc. Should you ever have an opportunity to discuss the book with others, you'll be bothered to state your opinions clearly, as you have taken the time to really consider all the aspects involved. (which is very far from) 7. Improved Focus and Concentration In our internet-crazed world, attention is drawn in a million different directions at once as we multi-task every day. In a single 5-minute span, the average person will divide their time between working on a task, checking email, chatting with a couple (via chat, skype, et.), keeping an eye on Twitter, monitoring their smartphone, and interacting with co-workers. This type of ADD-like behavior causes stress levels to rise and lowers our productivity. When you read a book, all your attention is focused on the story - the rest of the world just falls away, and you can immerse yourself in the very fine detail you're absorbing. Try reading for 15-20 minutes before work (i.e on your morning commute, if you take public transit), and you'll be surprised at how much more focused you are once you get to the office. water coming out 8. Better Writing Skills This goes hand-in-hand with the expansion of your vocabulary? Exposure to published, well-written work has a noted effect on one's own writing, as observing the cadence, fluidity, and writing styles of other authors. will invariably influence your own work. In the same way that musicians influence one another, and painters use techniques established by previous masters, so do writers learn how to craft prose by reading the works of others. 9. Tranquility In addition to the relaxation that accompanies reading a good book, it's possible that the subject you read about can bring about immense inner peace and tranquility. Reading spiritual texts can lower blood pressure and bring about/produce an immense sense of calm while reading self-help books has been shown to help people suffering from certain mood disorders and mild mental illnesses. 10. Free Entertainment Though many of us like to buy books so we can annotate them and dog-ear pages for future reference, they can be quite pricey. For low-budget entertainment, you can visit your local library and bask in the glory of the countless tomes available there for free. Libraries have books on every subject imaginable, and since they rotate their stock and constantly get new books, you'll never run out of reading material. If you happen to live in an area that doesn't have a local library, or if you are mobility-impaired and can't get to one easily, most libraries have their books available in PDF or epub format so you read them on your e-reader., iPad, or your computer screen. There are also many sources online where you can download free e-books, so go hunting for something new to read! There's already a genre for every literate person on the planet, and whether your taste lies in classical literature, poetry, fashion magazines, biographies, religious texts, young adults books, self-help guides, street-lit, or romance novels, there's something out there to capture your curiosity and imagination. Step away from your computer for a little while, crack open a book, and replenish your soul for a little while.

4. Expansão do vocabulário E o o vocabulário hein? 7. Melhora no foco e concentração.

Hedonism refers to a family of theories, all of which have in common that pleasure plays a central role in them. Psychological or motivational hedonism claims that our behavior is determined by desires to increase pleasure and to decrease pain.[1][2] Normative or ethical hedonism, on the other hand, is not about how we actually act but how we ought to act: we should pursue pleasure and avoid pain.[2] Axiological hedonism, which is sometimes treated as a part of ethical hedonism, is the thesis that only pleasure has intrinsic value.[1][3][4] Applied to well-being or what is good for someone, it is the thesis that pleasure and suffering are the only components of well-being.[5] These technical definitions of hedonism within philosophy, which are usually seen as respectable schools of thought, have to be distinguished from how the term is used in everyday language, sometimes referred to as "folk hedonism". In this sense, it has a negative connotation, linked to the egoistic pursuit of short-term gratification by indulging in sensory pleasures without regard for the consequences.[2

Major Depression (Clinical Depression) A constant sense of hopelessness and despair is a sign you may have major depression, also known as clinical depression. With major depression, it may be difficult to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy friends and activities. Some people have clinical depression only once in their life, while others have it several times in a lifetime. Major depression can sometimes occur from one generation to the next in families, but often it may affect people with no family history of the illness. What Is Major or Clinical Depression? Most people feel sad or low at some point in their lives. But clinical depression is marked by a depressed mood most of the day, sometimes particularly in the morning, and a loss of interest in normal activities and relationships -- symptoms that are present every day for at least 2 weeks. In addition, according to the DSM-5 -- a manual used to diagnose mental health conditions -- you may have other symptoms with major depression. Those symptoms might include: Fatigue or loss of energy almost every day Feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day Impaired concentration, indecisiveness Insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day (called anhedonia, this symptom can be indicated by reports from significant others) Restlessness or feeling slowed down Recurring thoughts of death or suicide Significant weight loss or gain (a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month) Who Is at Risk for Major Depression? Major depression affects about 6.7% of the U.S. population over age 18, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Overall, between 20% and 25% of adults may suffer an episode of major depression at some point during their lifetime. Major depression also affects older adults, teens, and children, but frequently goes undiagnosed and untreated in these populations. Are Women at Higher Risk for Major Depression? Almost twice as many women as men have major or clinical depression; hormonal changes during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, miscarriage, and menopause, may increase the risk. Other factors that boost the risk of clinical depression in women who are biologically vulnerable to it include increased stress at home or at work, balancing family life with career, and caring for an aging parent. Raising a child alone will also increase the risk. What Are the Signs of Major Depression in Men? Depression in men is significantly underreported. Men who suffer from clinical depression are less likely to seek help or even talk about their experience. Signs of depression in men may include irritability, anger, or drug and alcohol abuse (substance abuse can also be a cause of depression rather than the result of it). Suppressing negative feelings can result in violent behavior directed both inwardly and outwardly. It can also result in an increase in illness, suicide, and homicide. What Triggers Major Depression? Some common triggers or causes of major depression include: Loss of a loved one through death, divorce, or separation Social isolation or feelings of being deprived Major life changes -- moving, graduation, job change, retirement Personal conflicts in relationships, either with a significant other or a superior Physical, sexual, or emotional abuse How Is Major Depression Diagnosed? A health professional -- such as your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist -- will perform a thorough medical evaluation. You might receive a screening for depression at a regular doctor's visit. The professional will ask about your personal and family psychiatric history and ask you questions that screen for the symptoms of major depression. There is no blood test, X-ray, or other laboratory test that can be used to diagnose major depression. However, your doctor may run blood tests to help detect any other medical problems that have symptoms similar to those of depression. For example, hypothyroidism can cause some of the same symptoms as depression, as can alcohol or drug use and abuse, some medications, and stroke. How Is Major Depression Treated? Major or clinical depression is a serious but treatable illness. Depending on the severity of symptoms, your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist may recommend treatment with an antidepressant medication. They may also suggest psychotherapy, or talk therapy, in which you address your emotional state. Sometimes, other medications are added to the antidepressant to boost its effectiveness. Certain medicines work better for some people. It may be necessary for your doctor to try different drugs at different doses to determine which medicine works best for you. There are other treatment options for clinical depression -- such as electroconvulsive therapy, also called ECT or shock therapy -- that can be used if drugs prove ineffective or symptoms are severe. Other treatments for depression that is difficult to treat include intranasal ketamine or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) Can Major Depression Be Prevented? Once you have had an episode of major depression, you are at high risk of having another. The best way to prevent another episode of depression is to be aware of the triggers or causes of major depression (see above) and to continue taking the prescribed medication to avoid relapse. It is also important to know what the symptoms of major depression are and to talk with your doctor early if you have any of these symptoms.

Brazil Fails to Replace Cuban Doctors, Hurting Health Care of 28 Million 199 This public clinic in Embu-Guaçu, Brazil, now has a primary-care physician on duty only one day a week.Credit...Maira Erlich for The New York Times By Shasta Darlington and Letícia Casado June 11, 2019 Leer en español EMBU-GUAÇU, Brazil — The shiny plastic chairs all sat empty in a public health clinic, and the patients who staggered in were told to come back Thursday — the only day of the week now when a doctor is there. (making your sacrifice in vain) before it becomes so entrenched in the country Surfaced air missiles SAM This small Brazilian city, Embu-Guaçu, home to 70,000 people, recently lost eight of its 18 public-sector doctors, a devastating loss for the city's network of free clinics, forcing hard choices about who gets care and when. "It's heartbreaking," said Fernanda Kimura, a doctor who coordinates the assignment of physicians to the clinics for the local health department. "Like choosing which child to feed." The sick and the injured turned away that day in a working-class neighborhood of Embu-Guaçu represent only a tiny fraction of the estimated 28 million people across Brazil whos

The article highlights the healthcare crisis in Brazil following the recall of Cuban doctors by Cuba, in response to the strong anti-Cuban stance taken by Brazil's then-newly elected president, Jair Bolsonaro. Key points from the article include: Situation in Embu-Guaçu: This city, with a population of 70,000, lost almost half of its public-sector doctors. With only one doctor available one day a week in certain clinics, the situation is dire. Scale of the Crisis: Across Brazil, an estimated 28 million people's access to healthcare has been reduced following the departure of the Cuban doctors. Bolsonaro's Promise: When Cuba recalled its 8,517 doctors from Brazil, Bolsonaro promised to replace them with Brazilian doctors quickly. However, as of April following his January start as president, 3,847 public-sector medical positions across almost 3,000 municipalities remained unfilled. Mais Médicos Program: Initiated in 2013, this program deployed doctors to underserved areas in Brazil. Half of these doctors were from Cuba, serving in places that Brazilian doctors largely avoided. Bolsonaro intended to change the payment structure where most of the salary paid to Cuban doctors went to Cuba's government. Cuban Doctor's Predicament: While some Cuban doctors hoped to stay in Brazil and continue practicing after passing equivalency exams, the Brazilian government has not offered such exams since 2017. Impact on Health: The removal of Cuban doctors may reverse the increased access to primary care observed under the Mais Médicos program, possibly leading to the deaths of up to 37,000 young children by 2030. Fulfillment of Bolsonaro's Promise: Although the Health Ministry claimed to have filled all vacant positions by February, by April, many new recruits either quit or never showed up. Personal Accounts: The article shares personal stories, like that of Dr. Karel Sánchez, who after not being able to practice medicine, resorted to selling sweets and working at an airport. Local Impact: The health secretary of Embu-Guaçu points out the significant drop in child mortality rates due to the Mais Médicos program and expresses frustration over the support Bolsonaro received despite his clear stance against the program.

Brazil's legislators approve coronavirus 'war budget' The amendment eases fiscal and budgetary constraints to speed up measures to tackle the outbreak. Brazil's 'war budget' creates an extraordinary regime to prevent expenses related to the 'state of emergency' decree triggered by the pandemic Brazil's lower house of Congress has approved a constitutional amendment for a "war budget" to separate coronavirus-related spending from the government's primary budget to shield the economy from the crisis. The war budget was proposed by lower house Speaker Rodrigo Maia and other legislators. It still needs the Senate's approval by three-fifths of the votes in two rounds expected to take place next week. The lower house approved late on Friday the main text of the bill with 423 votes in favor and one opposed in the second round of voting. In the first round, the tally was 505 votes in favor and two against. The bill creates an extraordinary regime to prevent expenses related to the "state of emergency" decree triggered by the pandemic, which is valid until December 31, 2020, from being mixed with the federal budget over the same period. Besides easing fiscal and budgetary constraints to speed up measures tackling the outbreak, the amendment bill also grants the Brazilian central bank emergency bond-buying powers to stabilize financial markets. Speaker Maia on Friday estimated extraordinary spending from the war budget at between 500 billion reais ($93.5bn) and 600 billion reais ($112.22bn). Despite the budget loosening, Brazil is among a number of countries struggling to get medical supplies from China. Brazil's coronavirus death toll rose to 359, while confirmed cases jumped to 9,056 on Friday, according to Health Ministry figures. President Jair Bolsonaro, whose handling of the coronavirus outbreak has drawn growing criticism, on Saturday asked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for support in supplying pharmaceutical inputs. "Had a productive telephone conversation with President Jair Bolsonaro about how India and Brazil can join forces against the COVID-19 pandemic," Modi wrote on his Twitter account.

Cuba Is Pulling Doctors From Brazil After 'Derogatory' Comments by Bolsonaro Maireilys Álvarez Rodríguez, a doctor from Cuba, with a pregnant patient at a health center in the countryside of the state of Maranhão in Brazil.Credit...Dado Galdieri for The New York Times By Shasta Darlington Nov. 14, 2018 SÃO PAULO — Cuba said Wednesday it was recalling thousands of doctors deployed to poor and remote regions of Brazil after Brazil's far-right president-elect criticized the communist country's treatment of the medical professionals. Cuba started deploying health professionals to Brazil in 2013 as part of the Mais Medicos, or More Doctors, program, started by the leftist Dilma Rousseff when she was president. It provided medical services to communities underserved by Brazil's public health system. For residents of many small towns and violent, low-income urban neighborhoods, it was the first time a doctor had taken up residency among them in years, which made the program wildly popular. While most of the money that Brazil pays for the service goes to the Cuban government, the meager pay the visiting doctors earn is still significantly more than what they make at home. Cuba Withdraws Doctors from Brazil Following Bolsonaro's Criticisms Photo: Dr. Maireilys Álvarez Rodríguez of Cuba attends to a pregnant patient in a rural health center in Maranhão, Brazil. Photo Credit: Dado Galdieri, The New York Times By Shasta Darlington SÃO PAULO, Nov. 14, 2018 — Reacting to criticisms from Brazil's president-elect, Cuba announced on Wednesday its decision to recall thousands of doctors serving in remote and underprivileged areas of Brazil. Since 2013, Cuba has dispatched medical professionals to Brazil as part of the "Mais Medicos" (More Doctors) program, an initiative launched during the presidency of Dilma Rousseff. This program was vital for numerous communities that the Brazilian health system often overlooked. For many, the presence of a resident doctor was a first in years, earning the program widespread appreciation. Although a significant portion of Brazil's payments for this service benefits the Cuban government directly, the doctors' salaries, albeit modest, surpass their typical earnings in Cuba. Jair Bolsonaro, set to assume the Brazilian presidency on January 1, had previously signaled potential alterations to the existing agreement. He emphasized that the Cuban government should not withhold any part of the doctors' salaries and further stressed that these doctors should have the liberty to bring their families to Brazil, a privilege they currently lack. Furthermore, Bolsonaro expressed concerns regarding the medical training the Cuban doctors receive. He insisted on validating their medical degrees within Brazil. Referring to the arrangement, he told the Correio Braziliense newspaper, "The Cubans get about 25% of the salary, with the rest going to the Cuban dictatorship." He also highlighted the plight of a Cuban doctor who couldn't bring her family to Brazil, questioning, "How can one maintain diplomatic ties with a country treating its citizens this way?" Cuban authorities promptly informed the Pan-American Health Organization, which oversees the program, about their decision to pull out their doctors from Brazil. In an official statement, the Cuban Health Ministry expressed, "Due to the unacceptable conditions imposed, we cannot continue with the prese

Have you already reported your vaccination status? Completion of the Mandatory Reporting of Vaccine Status form should be immediate. If you have not done so, please do so as soon as possible by clicking here. Employees who have already been vaccinated must attach proof of it, which can be the card filled out and stamped at the vaccination center, scanned, or the Digital Vaccination Card, which can be obtained from the ConecteSUS website or application. The form also includes a field where the employee can inform if he has not been vaccinated. The form must be filled out with the current vaccination status and must be updated when the employee takes one of the vaccine doses. For those who are unable to respond immediately, as in the case of vacation or vacations, the maximum deadline is September 30th. The data collected will be treated in accordance with the Internal Guidelines for Personal Data Protection and Privacy. With the data obtained through the form, the company will have more precise information about the immunization status of its employees for the constant review and reinforcement of the prevention protocols in its units. This measure aims to ensure the health protection of all employees, since the vaccine, besides providing individual protection, is the main way to reduce the rates of infection. We reinforce that all employees must fill out the new form immediately, even if they have previously informed the company about their vaccination status through the Self-Declaration of Vaccination, which has been discontinued. The need for proof is valid for employees in all modalities and regimes, including those who are doing telework. Failure to provide the vaccination status information or providing a false declaration will subject the employee to disciplinary action, under the terms of the company's internal rules. Employees under service contracts must not answer the questionnaire. Petrobras will formally demand this information from contractors who have employees working on company premises. We remind you that individual precautions against Covid-19 - such as the proper use of masks, physical distance, and hand hygiene - remain essential for Covid prevention even after full vaccination.

WILDLIFE WATCH The Disturbing Secret Behind the World's Most Expensive Coffee Kopi luwak is made from coffee beans plucked from civets' feces. This is bad news for civets. It's the world's most expensive coffee, and it's made from poop. Or rather, it's made from coffee beans that are partially digested and then pooped out by the civet, a catlike creature. A cup of kopi luwak, as it's known, can sell for as much as $80 in the United States. Found in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the civet has a long tail like a monkey, face markings like a raccoon, and stripes or spots on its body. It plays an important role in the food chain, eating insects and small reptiles in addition to fruits like coffee cherries and mangoes, and being eaten in turn by leopards, large snakes, and crocodiles. At first the civet coffee trade boded well for these creatures. In Indonesia, the Asian palm civet, which raids commercial fruit farms, is often seen as a pest, so the growth in the kopi luwak industry encouraged local people to protect civets for their valuable dung. Their digestive enzymes change the structure of proteins in the coffee beans, which removes some of the acidity to make a smooth

Lindsey Graham's defense of guns as a deterrent receives brutal fact-check from former RNC chairman Bob BrighamJuly 26, 2021 South Carolina's "castle doctrine" and "stand your ground" laws provide legal protection to shoot people in many situations. Report Advertisement Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) praised the state relying on armed citizens to self-police during a Monday evening appearance on Fox News. "I'll tell you this, if you do this crap in South Carolina, you'll be lucky if you go to jail. You'll be lucky if somebody doesn't shoot you," he said. "So I say that because we've lost deterrence. These big Democratic cities and states have lost deterrence," Graham claimed. "People feel no longer feel afraid to assault somebody in the streets." Former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele fact checked the GOP senator. "Umm Senator perhaps you should speak with your state Law Enforcement Division before jawboning about South Carolina shooting people as a deterrence to violent crime: The murder rate went up around 25% in 2020; aggravated assault went up around 9% in 2020," Steele noted, citing a report from Fox Carolina.

What is Pre-Paid Burial Planning? Pre-paid burial planning is one of the most thoughtful and considerate gifts you can give to your loved ones, because it relieves the burden of making difficult and expensive decisions at the time of grieving, and lets you set your own legacy. The love story you built with your family will endure for generations, and planning your burial arrangements in advance allows your family the time to connect with the warm and tender memories you shared together. A burial (or casket) vault is a concrete outer enclosure that houses the casket. The vault is placed into the cemetery space as a protective lining for the casket, which is lowered into the vault at the time of burial. The vault protects the casket and keeps the land from shifting and sinking, ensuring that your cemetery space remains level and firm and maintains its beauty. This also creates a secure space for your loved ones to stand on. There are several different types of burial vaults that you can learn about in your free planning guide
