In 610 CE, Muhammad went to meditate in a cave in the mountains. According to Islamic teachings Muhammad received the call to be a prophet, which is a messenger of God. Muhammad later described that on that night he was visited and angel Gabriel who revealed teachings to him from God. God had chosen him to send his words to the People. Since Muhammad couldn't read or write, his followers memorized the teachings from Gabriel and put them into the Koran.
