Moses Austin

Father of SFA; received permission to bring the first Anglo settlers to Texas.

Battle of Medina

Fought on August 18, 1813 along the Medina River south of San Antonio between the republican forces of the Gutierrez-Magee expedition and the Spanish Royal army. The Republican army lost miserably, but it encouraged others to participate in the revolution.

James Long and Philip Nolen

Gutierrez Magee expedition

José Bernardo Gutiérrez and Augustus Magee proclaimed Texas independent of Spain, but were defeated.

State Colonization Law of 1825

Law passed that further opened Texas to settlement and immigration. New settlers had to promise to follow Mexican law, convert to Catholicism and "to display sound moral principles and good conduct."
