Identical Twins

Embryo

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

A medical condition in which body deformation or facial development or mental ability of a fetus is impaired because the mother drank alcohol while pregnant

Ultrasound

A non invasive test used to outline the shape and determine the consistency of various organs and diagnose pregnancy; it can also be used to determine the exact position, size, and gender of the fetus and to identify some developmental anomalies

Placenta

A structure that allows an embryo to be nourished with the mother's blood supply.

Pregnancy Test

A test to determine if a female is indeed pregnant. If administered as directed it is extremely accurate.

Stillbirth

An infant who at birth demonstrates no signs of life such as breathing, heartbeat, or voluntary muscle movements

STD

An infectious disease that is spread from person to person by sexual contact.

Care mother receives during the course of her pregnancy

Umbilical Cord

Circulatory - Cord used in the exchange of nutrients and oxygenated/deoxygenated blood between the fetus and the placenta. Grows out of placenta and connects to navel of the baby.

Amniotic Fluid

Fluid within the amniotic sac that surrounds and protects the fetus

Induced Labor

Labor begun by intervention, such as artificial rupture of the membranes or using an IV drip of oxytocin
