Leadership

Leading Through Failure- Lincoln failed time and time again. He proved to be a leader when he did not give up and continued to work hard throughout these times. When Lincoln returned from the Mexican- American war, he found out that his party had failed to elect a candidate. Lincoln was blamed for this, and this caused him to fall into deep depression. shortly after, Lincoln rose again and continued to keep trying.

Humility

Leaves Illinois- On February 11th of 1861, Lincoln left Springfield to go to Washington for his presidency. he did not want to leave his people that he loved so dearly but he had no choice. Lincoln only did this for his people. He knew that going to Washington would make it possible for his wish of equality for the people. Lincoln owed everything to his people. they were the people that helped him grow into a man and encouraged him to do what was best for his people.

Responsibility

Letter To Mrs. Bixby- In autumn of 1864, President Lincoln got news about a women named Lydia Bixby, who had lost 5 of her sons in war. Lincoln could relate to the pain of Mrs. Bixby because he also had lost his sons, so he decided to write a letter to her explaining how he was sorry for her loss and that he was praying for her. he also told her that he wished that she would remember them as memories of the good they did for our country.

Perseverance-

Lincoln and Douglas Debate- During the Lincoln and Douglas debate, Lincoln and Douglas had completely different opinions on equality but even though Douglas threw complete hatred towards him he still continued to share his opinion and do what he thought was right.

Honesty

Straight Forward with Generals- Lincoln never gave his generals firm orders. He only gave timid suggestions that were often enforced. when his suggestions weren't forced, he then gave them his honest opinion on their unaccomplished orders and began to speak in a more assertive tone. he gave demand towards his generals because his order needed to be done for his people. He was honest and straightforward about this.

Intelligence

Telegraph During War- During the war Abraham Lincoln used a telegraph to communicate with people in order to send and receive important information to win the war.

Leadership

Building Himself as a Leader- Lincoln had no formal education and taught himself everything. people said Lincoln was so absorbed that he was crazy. Lincoln would borrow law books and study them multiple times by himself. he stayed discipline in his work and taught himself how to be a great lawyer.

Empathy

Helping Mary After Death of Sons- 2 of Lincoln sons died throughout his lifetime. This caused his wife Mary to go into deep depression. during the times of each of his son's deaths he continued to stay by Mary's side and do whatever he could to support her even though he also was also in deep sadness.

Honest Abe

Lawyer- Lincoln was a self-taught lawyer who always spoke the truth and made honest and equal decisions for his people. Lincoln thought that when being a lawyer honesty was all that mattered.

Compassion

13th Amendment and Freedom of Slaves- Lincoln continued to fight for the 13th amendment to be passed so that the slaves would be free. he never gave up his determination to allow his people freedom. he put himself in the position of the slaves and did what he thought was right by freeing them no matter the cost.

Perseverance

13th Amendment- Lincoln was determined to pass the 13th amendment during his presidency. He believed that all people should be free, and he didn't want people to be treated unequally from others. many people were against him and often sent him threats due to his determination to pass the law for the people, but he continued to fight for what he wanted for the people.

Civility

1st Inaugural Address- Just before the outbreak of the civil war, Lincoln spoke the famous words "we are not enemies but friends". He believed that us as Americans and people were stronger than the problems that were tearing our world apart.

Who was Abe Lincoln?

Abe was born to a poor family, which already made him struggle in life. Abraham had many losses of family members throughout his life, but he still never failed to have a good sense of humor. Lincoln always looked for the good in things. he never failed to lighten up a room with his great sense of humor and his random silly jokes.

Who was Abe Lincoln?

Abraham Lincoln holds a huge role in our history. He is known for his accomplishments, but his great personality is what led him to those accomplishments. Abe was not born with these traits, he developed them throughout his life, he learned these traits through his mistakes. he was a man that did what was best for his people even at his lowest.

Civility

After the Civil War- After the war, Lincoln was asked what to do with the rebel armies and opposing political leaders. Instead of humiliation and punishment, he wanted to help them. he said he wanted to get the men of the composing confederate armies back to their homes and families.

Honesty

Douglas After Election- After the election, Lincoln was honest with Douglas, telling him his honest opinion about his thoughts even though he won over him.

Humility

Edwin Stanton- A member of Lincolns cabinet named Edwin Stanton who disgusted Lincoln. He called Lincoln a "long, lank creature of Illinois" and he said that if "that Giraffe" was permitted to appear in the case he would throw up his brief and leave. Lincoln was hurt by these words but still recognized his greatness for the people and excepted him into his cabinet.

Intelligence

Emancipation Proclamation- during Lincolns presidency he realized the pain and inequality that the slaves were experiencing, and he continued to fight for them and pass the emancipation proclamation for them.

Responsibility

First Dollar Earned- One day, Lincoln was going down the river on his tiny flat boat hauling produce, when he came across these two men who needed to get across the river to get on the steamer and go up shore. the two men offered Lincoln a dollar to transfer them across and Lincoln couldn't pass up the opportunity. this allowed Lincoln to earn his first dollar.

Empathy

Freeing Slaves- throughout Lincolns entire presidency he fought to give slaves freedom. He knew that they were treated poorly and that they were suffering due to this. He hated the fact that the slaves were treated differently, and he knew this needed to change. He did whatever he could to give freedom to slaves.

Honesty

In the Workplace- Abraham was always honest in the workplace. He told his customers when things were expensive and out of date. He would also tell people when they gave him the wrong amount of money or when he gave the wrong amount of money back to them.

Compassion

Injured Soldiers- Lincoln traveled long distances to visit injured soldiers on battlefields and in hospitals throughout the time of the civil war. One injured soldier who was near death, came up to Lincoln and asked him to write a letter from him to his mother before he passed, and Lincoln continued to write the letter and send it to his mother.

Courage

Lincoln and Douglas Debate- Lincoln and Douglas hold a speech giving their political opinions on slavery and equality. Lincoln explains how all men should be equal, but they aren't, and Lincoln wants to change this. Although tons of people disagree with Lincoln, he continues to preach his opinion. Douglas says he doesn't want equality for everyone because he doesn't want to cause war. even though many people disliked Lincoln for his thoughts on equality, he continued to fight for his people and win presidency over Douglas.

Civility

Lincoln and His Cabinet- Lincolns cabinet was mostly built out of his previous rivals. Normally people would be threatened by this and would want to find people that would actually agree with them to be in their cabinet, but Lincoln knew they were fit for the job. so, he rose above the problem and nominated them anyway.

Humility

Lincoln wanted people to see him as a regular person who wasn't any different from anyone else.

Compassion

Old Indian and Black Hawk War- During the Black Hawk war, a old strayed, hungry, and helpless man wandered into the camp. The soldiers wanted to kill the man because they thought he was a spy, but Lincoln who was their brave captain, came between his soldiers and demanded them not to take the poor man's life and he let him continue on his way.

Leadership

Through War and The Abolishment of Slavery- Lincoln lead our country through the civil war. He worked around obstacles and changed his leadership style to most successfully meet his people's needs. He created a healthy and productive work environment. He also led us to the abolishment of slavery in the 13th amendment and freedom of slaves in the emancipation proclamation.

Conclusion

Throughout his life Abraham Lincoln used all of these traits to become the great president he was and to reach all of his goals in life.

Courage

Wrestling Match in New Salem- When Lincoln moved to New Salem in 1831, he met a women named Anne Rutledge, who is known to be his first love. At that time many towns had a man who was known to be the bravest in town and who was stronger than everyone. This man was Jack Armstrong. One day Armstrong went into Annes tavern and started causing trouble, Lincoln noticed this, and it angered him. Lincoln then challenged him to a wrestling match. Lincoln was known to be a very strong and intelligent wrestler. Lincoln ended up winning the match even though it was very tough.
