Acid and bases
Basic
A solution is basic if it releases hydroxide ions when added to water. These solutions are said to be alkaline and are usually slippery.
Acidic
A solution when disolved in water releases excess Hydrogen ions (+)
Solutions with a pH less than 7 are
Acidic
Solutions with a Ph greater than 7 are
Basic
Neutralization
Chemical reaction between an acid and base that takes place in water
Solutions with a pH of 7
H+ ions , OH H+ -> water neutral
Strong acid
HCL
EXAMPLE REACTION
HCL-> H+1 Cl+
If you were to add equal amounts of a strong acid and weak base, what will happen?
It will completely dissolve in water
Define pH
Measure of concentration of H+ ions in it
Weak base
NH4OH
Strong base
Na(OH)
neutral
Pure water, equal concentration
What's the difference between a strong and weak acids
Strong acid, the acid completely dissolved in water. Weak acid, the acid doesn't completely dissolve in water.
what's the difference between a strong and weak base
Strong base dissolved in water, nearly all acid molecules dissociate into ions. Weak acid dissolves in water, only a small fraction of molecules dissolved in water
What is universal indicator paper
Undergoes the change in color
If you were to add a small amount of strong acid to a large amount of a weak base, what will happen
Will completely dissolve
Weak acid
acetic acid
