Adding Mixed Numbers
Name a profession that would use mixed numbers and give an example of how they would add mixed numbers.
A recipe needs to add and subtract mixed numbers for the ingredients. If you had 4 2/4 cups of flour and you wanted to make two recipes, one that needed 1 2/3 cups of flour and one that needed 2 3/4 cups of flour, you would need to know if you had enough.
Adding Mixed Numbers
You can find the sum of mixed numbers by adding the whole number and fraction parts separately. Then combine the two parts to find the total.

Since the bottom numbers aren't the same you have to find the LCM which is 15, so then you have 3 10/15 + 4 3/15 + 1 5 1/15 + 2 9/15. Then I would place them into two groups so I would put 3 10/15 + 4 3/15 in one group and 1 5/15 + 2 9/15 in the other group. First I would add all of the whole numbers which is 10. Then I would add the fractions in each group. Group 1 is 13/15 and group 2 is 14/15 . These equal 27/15 or 1 12/15 + the 10 whole = 11 12/15 or 11 4/5.
