Algebra 1 Vocabulary
Variable
A letter used to represent a number in equations or expressions.
Expression
A mathematical phrase containing numbers and operating symbols.
Equation
A mathematical sentence formed by placing an equal sign between two expressions.
Rational Number
A number that can be expressed as the ratio of two integers and the denominator cannot equal zero.
Function
A relation where every input has exactly one output.
Solution
A value for the variable or an ordered pair that makes an equation true.
Order of Operations
Grouping Symbols, Exponents, Multiply & Divide, Add & Subtract
Integers
Natural numbers, their opposites, and "0".
Factors
One of two or more expressions that are multiplied together to get a product.
Exponent
Tell how many times a number is used as a factor.
Slope
The ratio of the vertical change (rise) to the horizontal change (run).
Domain
The set of first elements in an ordered pair or table.
Range
The set of second elements in an ordered pair or table.
Output
The value that comes out of a formula or equation.
Input
The value you put into a formula or equation.
