Poll tax

a tax a person is required to pay before he or she is allowed to vote. Poll taxes were used in many southern states after the Reconstruction period to restrict African-American citizens' right to vote.

Activists

Individuals, usually outside of government, who actively promote a political party, philosophy, or issue they care about.

Grandfather clause

A clause in registration laws allowing people who do not meet registration requirements to vote if they or their ancestors had voted before 1867.

Australian ballot

A government printed ballot of uniform size and shape to be cast in secret that was adopted by many states around 1890 in order to reduce the voting fraud associated with party printed ballots cast in public.

Voting-age population

Citizens who are eligible to vote after reaching the minimum age requirement

Making registration easier by allowing you to register while getting a driver's license

the ability to read and write

White primary

the practice of keeping blacks from voting in the southern states' primaries through arbitrary use of registration requirements and intimidation

Registered voters

those legally eligible to vote who have registered in accordance with the requirements prevailing in their state and locality
