AP Human Geo FINAL
Regions
areas of unique characteristics
How has this changed?
technologhy has changed how fast we can move and with smartphones and computers we can easily interact with people across the globe
How does Human Geo differ from Physical Geo
Human geo is the study of things on earth's surface and why. Physical geo is about what is on Earth. Ex. Mountains
Formal region
also called uniform region. An area which everyone shares in common on or more distinctive characteristics. Example is Montana since the local government is as intense throughout.
The ______ of a feature in ______ is known as its distribution.
arrangement; space
The _____________________ of a feature in __________________ is known as its distribution.
arrangent, space
clustered density
compact
globalization of the economy has been led primarily by transnational corporations. What do these corporations do.
conducts research, operates factories and sells products in many countries not just where its headquarters and principal shareholders are located
poststructuralist geography
emphasizes the need to understand multiple perspectives regarding space.
geography and identity
gender-certain genders will do different activities througout the day age-type of activies also varies. Job vs. School Ethnicity-space may appeal to a certain cultural group wealth- higher class stores and bigger land
two types of patterns given in the text
geometric and irregular
Robinson Projection
globular. Looks very good. Distorts poles. Areas can be out of ate.
Expansion diffusion
hierarchal contagious stimulus
relocation diffusion
the spread of an idea through physical movement of people from one place to another is termed relocation diffusion
graphic scale
ususually consists of a bar line marked to show distance on Earth's surface. To use a bar line determine with a ruler the distance on the map in inches or cm. Then hold the ruler against the bar line and read the number on the bar line opposite the map distance on the ruler. The number on the bar line is the equivalent distance on Earth's surface.
Prime meridian
vertical line that goes around the earth
longitude
vertical lines
In the past, most interaction between places required what?
an animal, boat or walking

What role do familiar places have understanding situation of unfamiliar places?
-for directions you can use familiar places to lead people to unfamiliar places.
1/10000 vs. 1/1000000. Which is large scale.
1/10000 is large scale. Fraction is bigger
Ratio/ fraction

Mercator Projection
Big Greenland. Good for navigator :( Distance and size distored
What advantage does a map which shows the entire globe, a small-scale map, have?
A map that shows the entire globe helps you for reference and following world events. also following weather patterns and other patterns on a global scale.
List the two purposes of maps:
A reference tool-gps, looking at the world, bodies of water Communicating tool- depict the distribution of human activities or physical features and the reason for this distribution
Vernacular region.
Also called the perceptual region. Create a sense of home and family. Forms a sense of place. An example is the southern United States.
What is an example of reaction against globalism and globalization?
An example of reaction against globalism and globalization is when countries like China begin to make themselves more economically dependent.
Geographers use a GIS (Geographic Information System) to store "layers" of data. Give three examples of types of data stored in a single layer.
Boundaries of countries, bodies of water, roads
Map making
Cartography
What is concentration?
Concentration is the extent of a feature's spread over space.
What is density?
Density is the frequency in which something occurs in space.
How did latitudes arise
Derived from Earth's shape and rotation around the sun
diffusion
Diffusion is defined as the process by which a characteristic spreads across space. With regard to diffusion, define and, where possible, give an example of each of the following.
How does ethnicity play a role in geography?
Ethnicity plays a role in geography because blacks and white may live in different neighborhoods and go to different places.
What role does gender play in geography?
Gender role in geography determines where most men and women work, live, and participate in activities, like sports and ballet.
What does geography mean
Geo earth Graphy write
What is space-time compression?
Geographers apply the term space time compression to describe the reduction in the time it takes for something to reach another place
What is globalization?
Globalization is the spread of economies to create one worldwide economy.
In what ways is globalization of culture manifest in the landscape?
Globalization of culture is manifested in the landscape because people look for familiar places and things which changes the landscape over time.
In what ways is globalization of culture manifested in the landscape?
Globalization of culture is manifested in the landscape because people look for familiar places and things which changes the landscape over time.
What is the difference between GPS and GIS?
Gps- uses satellites to find positioning of an object Gis-Helps people use gps info. (computer program).
Equator
Horizantal latitude line that is at 0 degrees
example of small scale
Map of north carolina
How has modern technology played a role in globalization
Modern technology has led to transnational companies taking their business all over but also has helped preserve cultures by broadcasting them to others on tvs and on the internet
How has modern technology played a role in globalization?
Modern technology has played a role in globalization because without it the constant communication needed for a global economy would not be possible.
Father of Chinese cartography
Pie xiu
remote sensing
Remote sensing sattelites scan earth's surface and transmit images to a recieving station on Earth.
How does sexual orientation play a role in geography?
Sexual orientation plays a role in geography because gays usually live and operate establishments in the same areas/neighborhoods as other gays.
How has the desire to preserve local cultural traditions lead to conflict?
Some conflict has arisen because the same companies will be in each place. Cultural diversity does survive though.
Contemporary Geography is the study of 2 things:
Study of things found on Earth's surface Reasons for these locations
In what ways has the communication revolution played a role in globalization? Provide an example.
The communication revolution played a role in globalization by allowing people to spread ideas and cultures. An example of this is Christianity to Africa.
What are the two different types of patterns?
The two different types of patterns are grid patterns and linear distributions.
What are the two kinds of concentrations?
The two kinds of concentrations are clustered and dispersed.
North pole
Top of the globe
List several things that geographers can map using remotely sensed data. What would be the purpose?
Track drought, agriculture and sprawl. This is helpful to track human motions. Where are they going ? Why are they going ? Why is a drought effecting some places more than others.
Regions
We generalize to regionalize! characteristics of regions. Location Spatial extent-Spatial extent. The spatial extent of a data resource is a bounding box (defined by four Latitude/Longitude coordinates) and is the smallest rectangular shape which totally encloses all of the referenced data. Boundaries Hierarchical arrangement- Hierarchy. Ex. Caste system...I think
The Question asked by Geographers
Where are people and activities found on Earth? Why are they found there
What is the advantage of a map which shows only a small portion of the Earth's surface - like a neighborhood - that is, a large-scale map?
You are able to see a lot of features of an area. The map is rich with information and you were going to the place you would want a large scale map.
Sense of place
a characteristic that some geographic places have and some don't.
How did longitudes arise
a contest was put in place offering millions of dollars to whoever could measure longitude. John Harrison won by creating a portable clock.
globalization
a force or process that involves the entire world and results in making something worldwide in scope
Give some examples of things that retard interaction among groups.
acess to tecnology and cell service providers

hearth
is a place from which an innovation oringinates.
Define density:
is the frequency with which something occurs in space. This feature being measure could be people houses cars trees or anything else.

is the location of a place relative to other places
contagious
is the rapid widespread diffusion of a characteristic throughout the pop.
stimulus
is the spread of an underlying principle even though a characteristis itself apparently fails to diffuse.
