philadelphia convention

1787--12 colonies send delegates to revise the Articles of Confederation; Delegates soon agree the United States needs a new Constitution

articles of confederation

1st Constitution of the U.S. 1781-1788 (weaknesses-no executive, no judicial, no power to tax, no power to regulate trade)

shay's rebellion

A 1787 rebellion in which ex-Revolutionary War soldiers attempted to prevent foreclosures of farms as a result of high interest rates and taxes

john and abigail adams

A conservative republican who called for a bicameral legislature (see below) and appointed governor. His wife was a fervent supporter of women's suffrage.

northwest confederation

A group of Native Americans who wanted to fight off the whites. They were lead by Tecumseh.

republicanism

A philosophy of limited government with elected representatives serving at the will of the people. The government is based on consent of the governed.

federalists

A term used to describe supporters of the Constitution during ratification debates in state legislatures.

loyalists/tories

American colonists who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence

patriots/whigs

American colonists who were determined to fight the British until American independence was won

free market

An economic system in which prices and wages are determined by unrestricted competition between businesses, without government regulation or fear of monopolies.

contiental army

Army established by Second Continental Congress in 1775 with Gorgre Washington as commander in chief

battle of bunker hill

First major battle of the Revolutions. It showed that the Americans could hold their own, but the British were also not easy to defeat. Ultimately, the Americans were forced to withdraw after running out of ammunition, and Bunker Hill was in British hands. However, the British suffered more deaths.

second contiental congress

George Washngton became commander of the army, and paid for the army by printing paper money

joseph brant

Mohawk leader who supported the British during the American Revolution.

valley forge

Place where Washington's army spent the winter of 1777-1778, a 4th of troops died here from disease and malnutriton, Steuben comes and trains troops

war of attrition

Trench warfare between Germany and France. Called War of Attrition(wearing down) because the goal was to break down the enemy. There was no winner after 3 years of fighting.

first contiental congress

assembly of representatives from the colonies that first met in Philadelphia

the constitution of 1787

created by the National Assembly, the Constitution of 1791 set up a limited government; there would still be a king, but a Legislative Assembly would make the laws. King Louis XVI attempted to flee France to escape, but was recognized and brought back.
