To achieve their goal, they killed thousands of men, women, and children and even the whites who had assisted African Americans. Another goal of the KKK was to run the Republicans out of power to further limit African American support. Southern Democrats swept the majority of African Americans away from voting booths due to fear Supreme Court Cases: The Supreme Court had begun to take away African American protections that were recently implemented, such as undermining the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments. However, the rights provided as a citizen in a state were not applicable U.S. v. Cruikshank in 1876 decided that the 14th amendment did not give the federal government the right to punish whites who oppressed those of African descent U.S. v. Reese said that U.S officials were allowed to bar African Americans from voting because the 15th amendment did not "confer the right of suffrage on anyone"

Compromise of 1850: Territories acquired in the Mexican-American War would be allowed to practice popular sovereignty, and there was fear that if any of the territories joined as a state, the balance between slave states and free states would be uneven. The fugitive slave law was also passed in the compromised, requiring Northerners to return runaway slaves. Northerners were upset because they had supported the emancipation of slaves. Kansas-Nebraska Act: The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 ignored the Missouri Compromise and allowed slavery north of Missouri's border. The Nebraska Territory, Kansas Territory, Utah Territory, and New Mexico Territory could decide whether to prohibit slavery. The land of Kansas and Utah had originally prohibited slavery. Northerners were upset that slavery could expand into the once free states. Dred Scott decision: African Americans were not considered as citizens of the US, and could not sue in court, meaning that white Americans could abuse them due to their lack of power. Slaves were also considered as property, which many Northerners thought as inhumane.

What was the significance of Marbury v. Madison?

Description of the Event: Marbury, who is one of Adam's midnight judges, had never received his papers from the Secretary of State. When Adam had finished his term, the task of delivering the papers was for the new Secretary of State, James Madison. However, he had refused to give Marbury his papers and commission because he did not want to see a Federalist judge in power. Marbury decides to sue Madison, where the court (including John Marshall) decides he should receive his commission but are unable to enforce it due to the Judiciary Act of 1789. Only the executive branch was able to secure Marbury's payment from Madison. Significance: The case established "the principle of judicial review": The Supreme Court interprets the meaning of the Constitution and determines the constitutionality of laws. Through this establishment, the power of the Supreme Court had grown tremendously, while instituting that the judicial branch is equal to the legislative and executive branches.

"I am aware that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause for severity? I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice. On this subject, I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. No! No! Tell a man whose house is on fire to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his wife from the hands of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe from the fire into which it has fallen;—but urge me not to use moderation in a cause like the present. I am in earnest—I will not equivocate—I will not excuse—I will not retreat a single inch—AND I WILL BE HEARD. The apathy of the people is enough to make every statue leap from its pedestal, and to hasten the resurrection of the dead." — William Lloyd Garrison, "To the Public," from the Inaugural Editorial in the January 1, 1831, issue of The Liberator How does Garrison justify his approach towards slavery?

Garrison believes his severe/radical perspective and approach towards slavery is appropriate because it matches the graveness of slavery; he views slavery as an important matter similar to an emergency. But this is a reprieve only, not a final sentence. A geographical line, coinciding with a marked principle, moral and political, once conceived and held up to the angry passions of men, will never be obliterated; and every new irritation will mark it deeper and deeper." -- Source: Thomas Jefferson to John Randolph, April 22, 1820 What is the Historical Context of this document? "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..... The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpation on the part of man toward woman, having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world... He has not ever permitted her to exercise her inalienable right to the elective franchise. He has compelled her to submit to laws, in the formation of which she had no voice. Having deprived her of this first right as a citizen, the elective franchise, thereby leaving her without representation in the halls of legislation, he has oppressed her on all sides. He has made her, if married, in the eye of the law, civilly dead. He has taken from her all right in property, even to the wages she earns. He has denied her the facilities for obtaining a thorough education—all colleges being closed against her. - Declaration of Sentiments (1848) What document was the Declaration of Sentiments inspired by?
