Chinese Room Scenario

A man is inside a room that has a gap under the door and he receives sheets of paper from someone outside through this gap. Each sheet of paper has Chinese symbols written on them and the task for the individual inside the room is to translate those symbols into some other language. The person looks up the English translation for the symbol in a table and passes the translation back through the gap under the door. Searle's claim is that although the man has translated the work, he has no understanding of the Chinese language thus this doesn't prove intelligence. Therefore, symbol manipulation by a computer doesn't prove intelligence either.

Augmented Reality

is the overlaying of a virtual image on the real world.

Turing Test

Is a game between 3 players: A, B, & C. Players A & B sit together in a room, unseen by C, who converses with them via typewritten messages (a computer terminal if possible). A is a man, B is a woman, and C's sex doesn't matter (except to C of course). The goal of the test is for C to determine who is A and who is B. To make matters more interesting, A's job is to confuse C, and B's role is to minimize C's confusion. The question that Turing posed was - what will happen if a machine takes the place of A in this game? Turing felt that any machine able to take the place of A, without C knowing it must have a strong claim to intelligence.

Virtual Reality

a break through in computer technology that allows you to step through the computer screen into a 3-D artificial world.

Expert System

a program that encapsulates an experts' or several experts' knowledge of a particular knowledge domain in a computer-processable form. a computer system that uses a representation of human expertise in a specialist domain in order to perform functions similar to those normally performed by a human expert in that domain. a collection of rules that have been extracted from an expert by a knowledge engineer and typically take the form of an IF-THEN statements.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

the capability of the computer to learn. The goal of the first branch is to replicate (simulate) the intelligent behavior of a human The goal of the second branch of AI is to attempt to build expert systems that exhibit intelligent behavior regardless of their resemblance to human intelligence
