Classical Block Style

*blank* buildings feature a rectangular or square plan, with a flat roof and an exterior rich in classical detail. The exterior features a repeated classical pattern or series of arches or columns. The overall impression of such a building was a huge, classically-decorated rectangular block. Classical block aesthetic was also known as the "Beaux-Arts style" since it was developed principally by the French École des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts). Classical block architecture also flourished in the United States, particularly in New York.

Palladian-Style Architecture

*blank* buildings were based on Andrea Palladio's style of villa construction. Some of the buildings feature a balustrade which is a railing with vertical supports along the edge of the roof.

Temple-Style Architecture

*blank* style building design was based on an ancient temple. These buildings were uncommon during the Renaissance as architects of that period focused mainly on applying classical elements to churches and modern buildings like Palazzos and Villas. Many temple-style buildings feature a Peristyle(a continuous line of columns around the building), a rare feature of Renaissance architecture.

Portrait of Napoleon on the Imperial Throne (1806)

The painting depicts Napoleon in his decadent coronation costume, seated upon his golden-entrusted throne, hand resting upon smooth ivory balls. During his reign, the painting was owned by the Corps Legislatif which was a part of the French legislature. The painting was believed to be commissioned by Napoleon as king of Italy.

Antonio Canova

an Italian Neoclassical sculptor famous for his marble sculptures. He was born on November 1, 1757, and died on October 13, 1822. Canova is often regarded as the greatest of the Neoclassical artists, his sculpture was inspired by the Baroque and the classical revival, and characterized as having avoided the melodramatics of the former, and the cold artificiality of the latter. He opened the idea for portraying discrete sexual pleasures by using pure contours with his mythological compositions.

The Neoclassical Period

one of the great ages of public sculpture. Artists looked to Roman styles during the time of Alexander The Great for inspiration as well as to mimic their style. The sculptures display perfect proportions and balance of composition. There is an overall sense of harmony of form and it is very apparent that the artists took great pains in creating works of art that reflected a deep understanding of the human form and anatomy.

Bertel Thorvaldsen

was born on November 19, 1770, and died on March 24, 1844. He is the first internationally acclaimed Danish artist. He executed sculptures of mythological and religious themes characters.
