Basic Vs. Applied Research
applied research examples
-do violent video games increase aggression among children and young adults -how can a city increase recycling by residents -which strategies are best for coping with climate change?
basic research examples
-what is the impact of being observed by others on performance tasks like math? -how do neurons generate neurotransmitters -do we process visual images and sounds simultaneously?
basic research
pure science that aims to increase the scientific knowledge base -answer questions about how/why we behave; cognition, emotions, motivation, learning, psychobiology, personality, development, social behavior -decision making and cognitive demand -why do people fall in love -what contributes to someone bullying
Basic vs. Applied Research
Applied research (driven by theories) is research that seeks to answer a question in the real world and to solve a problem. Basic research is research that fills in the knowledge we don't have; it tries to learn things that aren't always directly applicable or useful immediately. -more of a continuum no clear distinction
applied research
scientific study that aims to solve practical problems -enhance quality of life; practical problems and potential solutions; program evaluation -relocation after divorce -DARE program
