Binary Fission (Study Guide)
What type of reproduction is binary fission?
Asexual
What is the purpose of binary fission?
To make a new bacteria/prokaryotic cell.
What type of cells undergo binary fission?
Prokaryotic
Outline the primary steps of binary fission.
First the DNA copies itself and attaches to the membrane. The bacteria grows longer and the DNA moves to opposite sides of the cell. The bacteria contracts in the middle then divides. Now you have two prokaryotic organisms.
Describe the difference between the structure and number of prokaryotic cell chromosomes and eukaryotic cell chromosomes.
In a prokaryotic cell, there is one single circular chromosome (big loop). Eukaryotic chromosomes are like the ones in humans and there are multiple.
Explain why it is called asexual.
It is asexual because only one cell is used for bacteria to reproduce, not two. "A" means not so it means not sexual.
