Duress

forcible restraint or restriction.

Forgery

intentionally altering, or false making, of a writing, with intent to defraud, that might have a legal effect.

Violation

offenses that are of lesser importance than felonies and misdemeanors.

Shoplifting

stealing goods from a store.

Robbery

taking of money or valuable property from a person against his will, by force or fear.

Burglary

the breaking and entering a building with the intent to steal.

Larceny

the crime of taking and carrying away one's personal property without the right to do so.

Embezzlement

the deprivation of another's property through breach of a trusting relationship.

Arson

the malicious or fraudulent burning of property.

Mens rea

the mental element required for a crime.

Tort

a civil wrong that a court will give a remedy.

Misdemeanor

a crime for which punishment is one year or less in prison and/or possible fine.

Crime

an act, committed or omitted, in violation of a public law governing it.

Felony

any serious crime for which the punishment can be more that one year or death.
