Essay: What is your career theoretical orientation?
The theory that best connects with me personally is Holland's theory of vocational choice which is based on the assumption that an individual's personality is the primary factor in vocational choice. He stated that daydreams about occupations were often precursors to occupational choices, and this relates to me because as a child I used to pretend to be a teacher gathering all the neighborhood children to participate in my classroom activities. He also stated that in order to be successful in our careers, we must choose occupations that are congruent with our own personality. This assumption also makes sense to me because I believe that it is important to choose a career that brings satisfaction and fulfillment. You are more apt to do well in your job if you are happy with the work you do. Holland's descriptions of personality types and characteristics in a person relate to the type of work they choose. My husband for example chose to be a postal worker. He falls into the conventional type & his chosen work environment has the same characteristics as his own, and he is very satisfied in his chosen profession as I know I will be in mine. :)
