He didn't want to get into another taxi; every driver he met in those didn't want to to talk to him. He came to New York in hopes of being able to talk to someone (even strangers because it's not like anyone he knew would talk to him). He had attempted to speak to the taxi drivers, but they had all let him down, so he just decides to walk alone. On his way to the hotel, he thinks about the gloves that were stolen at Pencey. He thought about what would have happened if he had approached the guy that had taken his gloves. At the hotel, Holden feels depressed and lonely; he went all this way to find someone to talk to, but no one will.

He took Holden's suitcases out so he could put his own inexpensive bags under the bed. This way people would think the nicer bags were his and the inexpensive ones were Holden's. Slagle's favorite word was bourgeois. Holden missed him because Slagle had a good sense of humor and made him laugh.
