A person can increase his or her charisma by developing some of the traits, characteristics, and behaviors of charismatic people. Behaviors of charismatic people that can be developed: - Create visions for others. - Be enthusiastic, optimistic, and energetic. - Be sensibly persistent; almost never say "no." - Remember people's names. - Develop synchrony with others. - Develop a personal brand, including making an impressive appearance. - Be candid. - Display an "in-your-face" attitude.

Charisma is a special quality of some leaders that differentiates them from others. Variety of definitions: - Greek word meaning "divinely inspired gift." - Special quality of leaders whose purposes, powers, and extraordinary determination differentiate them from others. - Having a charming and colorful personality. Definitions have a unifying theme: - Charisma is a positive and compelling quality that makes many others want to be led by the person who has it. --- The study of charisma grows in importance when its effects are recognized. Enhance productivity, lower accidents, and enhance job satisfaction. Much of the impact of charisma is based on the positive effect the charismatic leader triggers among group members. There are three types of charismatic leaders: socialized, personalized, and celebrity. Many charismatic leaders are narcissistic, or self-adoring in excess, and are self-promoting. ---- Charismatic leadership involves the ATTRIBUTIONS made by group members about the characteristics of leaders and the results they achieve. When group members PERCEIVE a leader to have a certain characteristic, the leader will more likely be perceived as charismatic. Charismatic leaders use impression management to cultivate their relationships with group members.

Charismatic and transformational leaders communicate their visions, goals, and directives in a colorful, imaginative, and expressive manner. Charismatic leaders: - Communicate their visions, goals, and directives in a colorful, imaginative, and expressive manner. - Communicate openly with group members and create a comfortable communication climate. - Solicit constituents' viewpoints on critical issues. - Encourage two way communication with team members while still promoting a sense of confidence. Three related aspects of communication style: Leadership by Inspiration - Articulate a highly emotional message. - Use metaphors and analogies. - Gear language to different audiences. Leadership by Storytelling - Inspire and instruct by telling fascinating stories. Extensive Use of Social Networking - Face-to-face networks. - Social networking sites.

CH 3 LO: Describe the concerns about charismatic leadership from the scientific and moral standpoint.

There may be a dark side to charismatic leadership. Charismatic leadership has been challenged from two major standpoints: Validity of the Concept - Some doubt charisma can truly be defined or measured. - Leadership polarity indicates leaders are often either revered or vastly unpopular. - May not even be necessary for leadership effectiveness. Misdeeds of Charismatic Leaders - Charismatic leadership can be exercised for evil purposes. - Some charismatic leaders are unethical and lead their organizations and outsiders toward illegal and immoral ends.

Transformational leaders are charismatic, extraverted, create a vision, encourage personal development of the staff, and give supportive leadership. --- A transformational leader is one who brings about positive, major changes in an organization. Charisma is a key component of transformational leadership, many of these characteristics also apply to transformational leaders. Many charismatic leaders, however, are not transformational. Transformational leaders: - Are charismatic. - Score high on emotional intelligence. - Have positive core self-evaluations. - Create a vision. - Encourage the personal development of others. - Give supportive leadership. - Practice empowerment. - Think innovatively. Timothy A. Judge and Ronald F. Piccolo reviewed eighty-seven studies to examine the impact of transformational leadership on various measures of performance. Transformational leadership showed the highest overall relationships on six criteria: - Follower job satisfaction. - Follower leader satisfaction. - Follower motivation. - Leader job performance. - Group or organization performance. - Rated leader effectiveness.

Leaders implement their vision by using vision statements and involving a wide range of employees in the process. A group of researchers studied the impact of leadership effectiveness on organizational performance. Findings indicated that: - Leadership effectiveness was a direct function of the leader's transformational behavior. - Intelligence and conscientiousness are the individual differences that contribute the most to being a transformational leader.
