CH05 Diagnosing
Describe the alignment of organization-level diagnosis model
1. Diagnosing organization effectiveness requires understanding each parts in the model and then assess how the process and elements fit or align with each other and with the inputs. 2. Organization effective is likely to be high when there is good alignment. 3. Key alignment Qs: Does the organization strategy fit with the inputs? Do the organization design components fit with each other to jointly support the strategy?
Organizations can be diagnosed at 3 levels
1. Organizational-Level Diagnostic Model 2. Group-level Diagnostic Model 3. Individual-level Diagnostic Model
5 open-system properties
1. environment 2. inputs, transformation, and outputs 3. boundaries 4. feedback 5. alignment
Organization Environment Inputs (3 environment types)
1. general environment 2. task environmen 3. enacted environment
Environment dimensions
1. rate of change and complexity 2. information uncertainties
Organization design is composed of 1 strategy, 4 components and 1 culture
1. strategy 2. technology 3. structure 4. management process 5. human resource systems 6. culture
Define open system property-Alignment
Alignment describes how well the system's different parts and elements align with each other to influence effectiveness.
Define open system property-boundaries
Boundaries help to distinguish between organizational systems and their environments because they establish the limits of the system. The boundaries can be defined as physical locations as well as managerial, technical, and social purposes.
What is diagnosis
Diagnosis is a collaborative process between organizational members and the ODP to collect pertinent information, analyze it, and draw conclusions for action planning and intervention.
Define open system property-Environment
Environments are everything outside the system that can directly or indirectly affect its outputs.
Define open system property-feedback
Feedback is information regarding the actual performance or the outputs of the system.
Describe organization design component - HR system
HR systems are the mechanisms for selecting, developing, appraising, and rewarding organization members
Define open system property-Inputs, transformations, and outputs
Inputs are human capital or other resources such as information, energy, and material. Transformations are the process of converting inputs into outputs. Outputs are the result of what is transformed by the system.
Describe organization design component - Culture
Organization Culture represents the basic assumptions, values, and norms shared by organization members.
What are outputs of organization design?
Outputs of organization design are measures of how well the design contributes to organization effectiveness on three kinds of outcomes: 1. organization performance 2. productivity 3. stakeholders satisfaction
What are task environments?
Task environments refer to the industry structure which is represented by five forces: supplier power, buyer power, threats of substitutes, threats of entry, and rivalry among competitors.
What is an enacted environment?
The enacted environment consists of organization members' perception and representation of the general and task environments.
What are general environments?
The general environments consist of all external forces that can directly or indirectly affect an organization. It can include a variety of social, economical, ecological and political forces.
Explain the Open-system model (inputs, transformations, outputs, feedback part)
The model suggest that the organization acquire specific inputs from the environment and transform them using social and technical process. The outputs of the transformation process are returned to the environment and information about the consequences of those outputs serve as feedback to the organization's function.
What is the open-system model (environment part)?
The open-system model recognizes that organization exist in the context of a larger environment that affects how the organization performs, and, in turn, is affected by how the organization interacts with it.
rate of change in an organization's general and task environment can be characterized ...
along a dynamic-static continuum
complexity of the environment refers to
number of different elements in the general and task environments that can significantly affect the organization
Describe organization design component - strategy
strategy is the way an organization uses its resources (human, economic, or technical) to gain and sustain competitive advantage
Describe organization design component - structure
structure is the way an organization divides and coordinates work into and across subunits
Describe organization design component - technology
technology is the way an organization converts inputs into products and services
