Identify at least five factors that influence our food choices.

1. Taste 2. Culture/environment 3. Social life 4. Weight concerns 5. Health benefits

What are some questions you can ask yourself to evaluate the credibility of published nutrition information (in print or on the internet)?

1. Was the research finding published in a peer-reviewed? 2. Was the study done using animals or humans? 3. Do the study participants resemble me? 4. Is this the first time I've heard about this?

Why is a double-blind placebo-controlled study considered the "gold standard" of research?

Because all of the variable are the same and controlled for the groups of subjects and neither the subjects not the researcher are biased toward one group.

List the six categories of nutrients found in foods and in the body

Carbohydrates 2. Lipids 3. Proteins 4. Vitamins 5. Minerals 6. Water

How many kilocalories are provided in a gram of carbohydrate? Protein? Fats?

Carbohydrates and protein provide 4 kilocalories per gram. Fats yield 9 kilocalories per gram.

List some food sources for carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.

Carbohydrates: Bread, cereal, legume, and nuts Lipids: margarine, butter, oils, and animal products Proteins: meats, dairy products, soy, nuts, and seeds

For each of the 6 classes of nutrients, briefly describe their primary role in the body. Use the table below to guide you.

Carbohydrates: supply the simple sugar, glucose which is the primary source of energy for several body cell types. Main source of energy Proteins: is a building block, they synthesize, grow, and maintain tissues in the body. Fats: vitamins that dissolve in fat and can be stored in the body. Water: vitamins that dissolve in water and they generally cannot be stored in the body and must be consumed daily. Vitamins: helps enzymes catalyze reactions in the body. Minerals: assist in the body process and are essential to the structure of hard tissues.

Describe the steps of the scientific method.

Observe or ask a question- experiment Hypothesis- this is where you will make a prediction of what is going to happen Experiment - test your hypothesis Observe- watch what the experiment does Was the hypothesis supported or not; if not then go back and revise experiment or hypothesis

How does sample size affect the credibility of research results?

Sample sizes must be large enough to ensure that differences found in the study are due to the treatment rather than to chance. Generally the larger the sample size, the more confident the researchers are that the data reflects reliable differences that would most likely be seen in the population.

Describe what the science of nutrition studies.

Study of food and the nutrients we need to sustain life and reproduce. It also examines the way food nourishes the body affects health.

When we use the term "calorie" to describe the energy content of food, are we actually referring to the word "calorie" or are we referring to the word "kilocalorie"? Explain.

We would be referring to calorie because calorie with a lowercase c is much smaller unit of measurement than Kilocalorie. Kilocalorie is equal to 1,000 calories.
