what are some restraint alternatives?

use diversions such as TV, videos, music, game. videos of family or friends. time is spent in supervised area (dining room), food, fluid, hygiene, and elimination needs are met, back messages, calm quite setting etc.

identify how to use restraints safely?

CMS, OBRA, FDA, TJC guidelines are followed. observe for increased confusion or agitation, protect the persons quality of life. follow manufactures instructions, apply restraints with enough help to protect the person and staff from injury, observe the person every 15 minutes or as often as noted in the care plan.

an indication or characteristic of a physical or psychological condition

chemical restraint

any drug that is used for discipline or convenience & not required to treat medical symptoms.

physical restraint

any manual method or physical or mechanical device, material or equipment attached to or near a persons body that he or she can not remove easily and that restricts freedom of movement or normal access to ones body

explain legal aspects of restraint use?

laws are followed: restraints must protect the person, a doctors order is required, the least restrictive method is used, restraints are used only after other measures fail to protect the person, unnecessary restraint is false imprisonment, informed consent is required.

what is the purpose of restraints?

patients have the RIGHT to be free from restraint. restraints may only be used to treat a medical symptom or for the immediate physical safety of the person or others.

identify the risks related to restraint use?

restraints can CAUSE falls, not prevent. other risks are: agitation, anger, constipation, cantractures, cuts & bruises, decline in physical function, etc.

remove easily

the manual method, device, material, or equipment used to restrain the person that can be removed intentionally by the person in the same manner it was applied by staff
