Chapter 1 Brain Development - Experience Expectant vs Experience Dependent
Experience Expectant Development
DNA (genes) direct the formation of these connections
Experience Dependent Development
Experiences (available only in special environment) cause the growth of brain connections
Experience Expectant Development
an overabundance of synapses (brain connections) are created in utero humans are designed to have more connections than needed
Experience Dependent Development
connections are not formed in utero
Experience Expectant Development
development that you are expecting to have examples: walking, speaking, and understanding language, visual perception
Experience Dependent Development
effortful because you are growing connections
Experience Expectant Development
effortless because you are not growing connections if it is not there, it will wither away
Experience Expectant Development
experiences (available in any normal human environment) strengthen the existing connections and prone away existing connections not being used walking: have to be put on the ground talking/understanding: human interaction by 2 1/2 you will be talking in full sentences, somebody needs to be talking on a daily basis to learn how to speak ability to see: must have light coming in eye and hitting the retina
Experience Dependent Development
genes do not play a role
Experience Expectant Development
happens in all people with normal brains
Experience Dependent Development
happens only to people with special experiences
Experience Dependent Development
you are depending on it examples: reading, algebra, playing basketball and piano
