What is an effective apology? What characteristics must it contain?
1) An expression of guilt remorse or embarrassment 2) recognition of the inappropriate conduct and acknowledgment that negative sanctions apply for having committed the action. 3) Rejection of inappropriate conduct and disparagement of the bad self that misbehaved 4) Acknowledgment of the appropriate conduct and a promise to behave accordingly in the future 5) Penance restitution or an offer to compensate the victim or victims
What are the four strands that need to occur if forgiveness is to lead to reconciliation?
1. The strand of truth: Acknowledge what happened 2. The strand of Forbearance: Do not seek revenge 3. The strand of empathy: feel with or for another person 4. Commitment to the relationship
What are other types of apologies and when are they effective?
Expedient apology: goal to avoid rather then engage. Compelled apology: Forced Public apologies: maybe good to open the doors of communication
What are the characteristics of forgiveness?
Love empathy and healing
When are we likely to "forgive" someone?
When you stop being angry at someone.
Forgive:
process under taken by one person in relation to the other with or without interaction with that person
Reconciliation
the act of causing two people or groups to become friendly again after an argument or disagreement
