What is nursing informatics?

What is documentation?
Any written or electronically generated information that describes the care or service provided to a particular client or group of clients. Through documentation, nurses communicate to other healthcare professionals through observations, decisions, actions and outcomes of care.

Designed to find a solution to a practical problem. It is often referred to as clinical research and is usually carried out in a non-laboratory setting.
What is the main role of the Institution Review Board's (IRB) in research?
IRBs are mandated to review all research that involves human subjects in institutions that receive federal funds. The purpose is to protect subjects from unnecessary risk or from risks that outweigh potential benefits.

How does HIPAA relate to patient privacy?
- It's a law that amended the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to improve portability and continuity of healthcare information and ensure privacy of patient information. - Can't release patient information to the public or anyone that doesn't have rights to the information. Only the most minimal amount of information necessary is given to providers and insurers. Health information cannot be openly shared by healthcare providers.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Privacy policy to keep patient information private.
The format and content of documentation of care should include what?
Omitted care, medication and outcomes, noncompliance-nonadherence and reason, allergies, injection sites, therapy, blood administration, abnormal lab reports, status change, name, date, etc.
Remember that employing evidence-based practice requires use of research findings but also what/who else?
Patients, interdisciplinary teams. The best research comes from whatever the research findings are.
How does informatics impact care?
The IOM recommendations indicate that informatics can lead to safe, quality care - and it truly can. Although it does not guarantee perfection.
