A state which sponsored Islam, and was a major point of trade and controlled many shipping lanes.

" king" a Sanskrit term that was adopted by Funan and referred to the Hindu rulers in India.

Srivijaya

670-1025 C.E. A kingdom after Funan, which had a powerful navy, sea-trade between China and India, and was displaced by the Chola kingdom in the 11th century.

Kingdom of Axum

An African kingdom that was a central area and became involved with the Indian Ocean trade.

Kingdom of Vijayangar

Based in northern Deccan, did not generate the large-scale, centralized imperial state, but was an important center for trade.

Dhows

Boats that averaged about one hundred tons burden in 1000 and 400 in 1500. Used by Indian, Persian, and Arab sailors.

Chola Kingdom

Came to power when Chola forces conquered Ceylon, financed trade, and dominated waters and did not build tightly centralized states.

Hindu Devotional Cults

Cults in Hinduism that were dedicated to a single god. Most commonly Vishnu or Shiva.

Funan

The first state to known to have reflected Indian influences.

Mahmud of Ghazni

The leader of the Turks in Afghanistan, who built Ghanzi as a capital and conquered many places.

Sultante of Delhi

They conquered most of the Hindu kingdoms in northern India, and created an Islamic state, and its capital of Delhi.
