A Virginian, architect, author, governor, and president. Lived at Monticello. Wrote the Declaration of Independence. Second governor of Virgina. Third president of the United States.

Federal Republic

A government in which power is divided between the national, or federal, government and the states.

Stamp Act

A tax that the British Pariliament placed on newspapers and official documents sold in the American Colonies

Treaty of Paris

AN Agreement signed by British and American leaders that stated the United States of America was a free and independent contry

Benjamin Franklin

American intellectual, inventor, and politician. He helped to negotiate French support for the American Revolution.

Popular Sovereignty

Basic principle of the American system of government that asserts that the people are the source of any and all governmental power and that government can exist only with the consent of the governed.

George III

English monarch at the time of the revolution. He was the main opposition for the colonies due to his stubborn attitude and unwillingness to hear out colonial requests/grievances.
