Why does a sodium street lamp give off a different color light than a neon light?

neon will give a red light whille sodium a yellow light. When atoms are excited, electrons are promoted beyond the outer shell and the atom ionises. When the electron falles back again, the energy is re-emmitted as light. The wavelength of the light depends on the element.
