Understand key concepts in a wave: amplitude, wavelength, frequency, etc.

Frequency (v or nu)- the number of waves that pass a point in a given period of time, determines the color of light. Wavelengths (lamba)- a measure of the distance covered by the wave from the one crest to the next, determines the color of light.

Understand the composition of matter: elements, compounds, mixtures, etc.

Pure substance- made of only ONE component and its composition is invariant. -Elements: a pure substance that can't be chemically broken down into simpler substances; basic building blocks of matter. ex: 0xygen and Helium -Compound: a pure substance composed of two or more elements in a fixed definite proportions. ex: Water Mixtures- a substance composed of two or more components. -Heterogeneous Mixture: Separate into distinct regions. ex: wet sand -Homogenous Mixture: Thoroughly mix. ex: tea w/ sugar

Understand the difference among solids, liquids and gases.

Solids- Have a fixed volume and a rigid shape. Do not pass each other or move around. ex: ice, aluminum, diamonds Liquids- Have a fixed volume but not a fixed shape. Free to move around. ex: water, alcohol, gasoline Gases- Have a lot of space between them making them free to move, these qualities make gases compressible.
