A proprietary network or data center that supplies hosted services to a limited number of people
What does Software-as-a-Service cloud computing provide?
The provider provides the hardware infrastructure, and software product and interacts with the user through a front-end portal (e.g. Web-based email, database processing)
What is the goal of cloud computing?
Provide easy, scalable access to computing resources and IT services
Services hosted over the internet are broadly divided into 3 categories. What are they?
-Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) -Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) -Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)
How does cloud service differentiate from traditional hosting?
-Sold on demand (typically by the minute or hour) -User can have as much or as little of the service as they want at any given time -Service is fully managed by the provider (User only needs a PC and Internet access)
What is an advantage and disadvantage of Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud computing?
Advantage: Cloud computing allows a company to only pay for as much capacity as needed Disadvantage: Possibly costly depending on how much usage
What is an advantage and disadvantage of Software-as-a-Service cloud computing?
Advantage: The provider provides everything from hardware infrastructure, the software product, and a front-end portal to interact with the user with. End user is free to use the service from anywhere Disadvantage: N/A?
What is an advantage and disadvantage of Platform-as-a-Service cloud computing?
Advantage: Users can use a provider's platform over the internet Disadvantage: Some providers limit portability of software (e.g. providers may not allow software created by customers to be moved off their platform)

Anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet.

What does Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud computing provide?
Provides virtual server instances with unique IP addresses and blocks of storage on demand. (e.g. Dropbox/Amazon Web Services)
What is a public cloud?
Public cloud sells services to anyone on the Internet (e.g. Amazon Web Services)
What does Platform-as-a-Service cloud computing provide?
Set of software and product development tools hosted on the provider's infrastructure. Developers can create applications on the provider's platform over the Internet (e.g. Force.com, GoogleApps)
