South Korea was controlled by the United States, where North Korea was controlled by the Soviet Union after WW2. The original goal of the United Nations forces in Korea was to push the North Koreans back across the 38th parallel. The new goal for the war after the North Koreans were pushed back was for democratic Korea. The country became divided in half along the 38th parrel of latitude. It ended up being a stalemate at the 38h parrel that lasted for alomst 2 years. The agreement that ended the Korean War created a demilitarized zone.
