How did Eratosthenes measure the size of the Earth?

-Measuring the shadows cast by a vertical pillar in Alexandria. -7.2= the degree of shadow that was cast from the stick -360= the size of the earth -800 km= the distance between Syene and Alexandria -x the unknown variable we look for -he cross multiplied and got the answer of 40,000 km

science vs. technology

-Science is concerned with gathering knowledge and organizing it. -Technology is applied science, and used by technologists and engineers for practical purposes. -Technology can be both helpful and harmful. -The risk assessment is a way of helping us understand the many risk that come with technology. It is useful because it helps us avoid any risk later on in life

compare science, art, and religion

-Science is principally engaged in discovering and recording natural phenomena. -The Arts are concerned with personal interpretation and creative expression. -Religion addresses the source, purpose, and meaning of it all. -Science, art, and religion have different domains, although they can overlap with one another. -Arts, and science both makes a wholeness that affects the way we view the world -Science, and religion are different, but complementary fields to human activity

Who was Eratosthenes?

-Used Geometry to calculate the circumference (size) of the Earth -Ancient Greek astronomer, geographer, and mathematician

Pseudoscience

-fake science. -lacks the key ingredients of evidence and having a test for wrongness

law

-what -math -answers the question "what happened" -Created when a pattern or event in nature remains consistent despite endless testing -can be refuted or rejected.

theory

-why -explains why -can be disproven or changed over time

Steps of the Scientific Method

1. Recognize a question 2. make an educated guess (hypothesis) 3. predict consequences of the hypothesis 4. preform experiments to test the hypothesis 5. Draw a conclusion

3 facts about Eratosthenes

1. he was one of the foremost scholars of his time 2. he wrote the book Geography which was the first book to give geography a mathematical basis 3. he invented a method for finding prime numbers

physics & why it's the basic science

Physics is the basic science. It's called the basics of science because It's about the nature of basic things such as motion, forces, energy, matter, heat, sound, light, and structure of atoms

scientific method

a method of research in which a problem is identified,

how to determine if something is a scientific hypothesis or not

if there is no test for its possible wrongness, then the hypothesis is not scientific

science

works within nature, it is also a way of gathering knowledge and organizing it
