Economic consequences
-Southern economy is now in ruins; running short on labor due to freedom of slaves - Wage labor in the south replaced Slave labor -1/4th of men in the south were dead -Economy shifts from Agrarian to Industrial —foreign nations learned to grow their own crops and didn't need to buy it from the south- Hurts south's economic recovery post Civil War
Political consequences
-Strengthened the Power of the Federal Government —Abe Lincoln's death in April of 1865 -Reshaped elections in 1868 500, 000 African Americans voted, most of them for the1st time. - African Americans held Political Office at the Local, State, & Federal Levels of Government - 1st President in US history to be Impeached Andrew Johnson
