Blueprint

A copy of a drawing in which the lines are white and the background is blue

Elevation

An element of architectural drawing, it refers to the height above sea level or other defined surface

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)

Shows the placement of the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning components. Piping system plans for gas, oil, or steam heat may be included also

Dimensions

The actual measurement of an object. It can measure to the exterior or the interior portion of the object

Beam

a large, horizontal support made of concrete, steel, stone, or wood

Engineer's Scale

a measuring device divided uniformly into multiples of 10 divisions per inch so drawings can be made with decimal values. It is used when an area is too large to be represented by an Architect's scale

Engineer

a person that applies scientific principles in design and construction

Architect

a qualified, licensed person who creates and designs drawing for a construction project

Elevation Drawing

a side view that shows the height of the object

Civil Plans

also called site plans or survey plans, they show topographic features such as contour lines and trees

Floor Plan

an aerial view of the layout of each room. It shows interior and exterior walls, doors, windows, and stairs

Electrical plans

engineered drawings for electrical supply and distribution, include locations of the electric meter, switchgear, and convenience outlets

Detail Drawing

enlarged views of some special features of a building, such as floors and walls

Architect's Scale

is divided into feet and inches and is used on all plans other than site plans

Architectural Plans

shows the design of the project, includes many parts, such as the floor plan, roof plan, elevation drawings, and section drawings

Foundation Plan

shows the lowest level of the building

Contour Lines

solid or dashed lines showing the elevation of the earth on a civil drawing

C. A. D. (Computer Aided Drafting)

the way almost all blueprints are made today

Dimension line

usually has an arrowhead at both ends, with the measurement written near the middle of the line
