Convergent and Divergent Thinking
Divergent and convergent
Important to critical thinking - interrelated - deductive looks inward for solution - divergent looks outward for solution
divergent thinking
a thought process or method used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions
convergent thinking
(2+2=4) - narrows options to one solution such as multiple choice - seductive logic (Sherlock Holmes) comes up with logical answer to question - who did it
Divergent thinking
- short amount of time, spontaneous, free flowing manner - connections made as thinking works outwards to develop original/unique ideas to solve problems/achieve goal - brainstorming, méditation, mind wandering, free writing, making lists, keeping journal - Einstein asked what it would be like to ride on beam of light - developed theory of relativity
convergent thinking
Bringing facts and data together from a variety of sources and applying logic and knowledge to solve problems, achieve objectives or make informed decisions
Both require critical thinking
Used to solve problems, do projects, achieve objectives. Two sides of same going to critical thinking - convergent + divergent = critical thinking
