Standard 10 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Cross cultural leadership. SW shall be able to communicate information about diverse client groups to other professionals.
Standard 4 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Cross cultural skills. SW shall use appropriate methodological approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect the workers understanding o the role of culture in the helping process.
Standard 6 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Empowerment and Advocacy: SW shall be aware of effects of social policies and programs on diverse client populations, advocating for and with clients whenever appropriate.
Knowledge relates to Cultural Competency by?
Understanding diversity in all its forms...not just racial and ethnic differences
Standard 3 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Cross culture knowledge. SW shall have and continue to develop specialized knowledge and understanding about the history, traditions, values, family systems, and artistic expression of major client groups served.
Standard 7 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Diverse workforce. SW shall support and advocate for recruitment, admission, and hiring, and retention efforts in SW programs and agencies that ensure diversity within the profession.
Standard 1 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Ethics and values. SW shall function in accordance with the values, ethics, and standards of the profession, recognize how personal and professional values may conflict with or accommodate the needs of diverse clients.
Standard 8 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Professional Education. SW shall advocate for and participate in educational and training programs that help advance cultural competence with in the profession.
Standard 2 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Self Awareness. SW shall develop an understanding of their own personal and cultural values and beliefs as a first step in appreciating the importance of multicultural identities in the lives of people.
Standard 5 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Service Delivery. SW shall be knowledgeable about and skillful in the use of services available in the community and broader society and be able to make appropriate referrals for their diverse clients.
What are the 3 functions of cultural competence?
1. Cultural awareness 2. Knowledge acquisition 3. Skill development
Skills relate to cultural competency by?
Ability to apply knowledge of clients' diversity and his or her personal awareness in a way that empowers the client and that yields positive change for the benefit of the client in a way that is appropriate for client's cultural context THAT is when therapeutic gain occurs....and the purpose of cultural competence (p. 21)
Cultural Competence
Ability to perceive others through their cultural lens, knowledge of key beliefs and values, personal comfort with differences, willingness to challenge and change previously held beliefs and stereotypes, flexibility and adaptability, and understand effect of culture on an individual's life.
Culture
Beliefs, customs, and traditions of a specific group of people. The integrated pattern of human behavior that includes thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, & institutions of a racial, ethnic, religious, or social group. (NASW, 2000) The totality of ways being passed on from generation to generation (NASW 2001) Includes ways in which people with disabilities or people from various religious backgrounds or people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender experience the world around them.
What is Awareness?
Clinician's personal, conscious understanding of Worldviews/ zeitgeist, Expectations, Privileges, Biases, Assumptions, Paradigms/ theoretical orientations.
Standard 9 of Cultural Competence in SW Pract
Language Diversity. SW shall seek to provide and advocate for the provision of information, referrals, and services in the language appropriate to the client which may include the use of interpreters.
