You can easily find what you need straight away, and find things from the past quickly as well. A proper filing system allows others to find files easily in situations where they are filling in for you or taking over a job if you are busy or sick. It's also bad to create a habit of saving things on your desktop as it can slow down your computer with such large files. A filing system also allows you to keep track of the work you have done and also refer back to any changes that have been made. It is crucial for smooth business workflow.

What are vector graphics?

Vector graphics are not images made up of pixels but are instead made up of mathematical formulas. They are made up of points that are joined together by lines and curves. These lines and curves have different weights and colours, and the shapes that are created are filled with different colours. Because they do not contain any pixel data, vectors can be scaled infinitely without the loss of quality. This means they can be used on almost anything is scaled to proportion. Vectors are object based and are made up of 2 types - closed path and open path.

Backing up work

Working with large files means our computers can crash any time. To avoid risking this, it is best to save to an external hard drive or a cloud service.

How should our work be saved?

You shouldn't override your work. Designers need to have a habit of saving in a new document. When you present artwork to a client and come back with changes, when you make the changes, save as a new file. This way, you can track the work you have done so far, and also refer back to a previous version if needed. It's important to name them so you understand easily. e.g. v1, v2, v3 and final. For the final file, you can name it final and save it in a final artwork folder. The others can be saved in a 'concepts' folder.
