Deepest Part of The Oceans: Kuzaj
Why was sonar developed?
To detect submarines
True or False: The largest geological feature on Earth is underwater
True
How long is the trench?
1500 miles
How fast does the Trieste move?
3 miles per hour
How long did the Challenger sail around the world?
4 years
How long ago did the Marianas Trench form?
50 Million years ago
How does sonar work?
A machine sends sound waves into the water, when the sound waves hit an object (like a fish or the bottom of the ocean) they reflect the sound back. The sonar device measures the time it takes between the sound wave being put out and when it comes back to determine the distance between the device and the object or seafloor.
Why do scientists think the trench helped create the Mariana Islands?
Because the shape of the islands perfectly mirrors the exact shape of the trench.
What came out of the volcanoes they discovered?
Mud
How far down did the weight go?
Nearly 5 miles, 4475 fathoms
Why did they decide to go back to the surface?
They couldn't see anything because of a dust cloud
How did they measure the depth of the ocean floor?
They used hundreds of miles of rope with lead weights attached to it.
True or False: If we put Mount Everest inside the trench it would stick out above the water surface?
False
Where do the underwater trenches and ridges sit?
On the boundary of tectonic plates
What explains the magnetic stripes on either side of the mid atlantic ridge?
Reversal of the Earth's magnetic field
