Steps to Dividing Fractions Example used is 1/2 divided 1/4

1/2 divided by 1/4 1. keep the first fraction -leave the first fraction (1/2) just how it is 2. change the sign to multiplication -change the division sign to mulitiplication to remind you *Top TIMES Top and Bottom TIMES Bottom* 3. flip the second fraction - make the 2nd fraction (1/4) look like (4/1) by flipping it 4. multiply the problem through - now multiply the 1st fraction (1/2) TIMES the 2nd fraction (4/1). *Top TIMES Top and Bottom TIMES Bottom* A.) Multiply two top numbers (numerators) - #1 TIMES #4 is equal to 4 *the top of the fraction is now 4 B.) Multiply two bottom numbers (denominators) - #2 TIMES #1 is equal to 2 *the bottom of the fraction is now 2 C.) The answer to 1/2 divided by 1/4 is equal to 4/2 - it is the same as saying 1/2 X 4/1 is equal to 4/2 - because we flipped the 2nd & multiplied 5. Simplify or REDUCE - the fraction 4/2 will reduce because it is even - the top # (4) divided by 2 is equal to 2 - the bottom # (2) divided by 2 is equal to 1 - when you write the fraction it looks like 2/1 (or just 2) * this is improper so divide the top # by the bottom # * 2 divided by 1 is equal to 1

11. 5 ÷ 9/10

Steps to dividing whole numbers and fractions Example used is 2 divided by 3/4

2 divided by 3/4 A. Change the whole number to a fraction - #2 as a fraction by adding a 1 as the bottom number * 2 is equal to 2/1 now B. It now looks like 2/1 divided by 3/4 **Go through steps for dividing fractions** 1. keep the first fraction -leave the first fraction (2/1) just how it is 2. change the sign to multiplication -change the division sign to multiplication to remind you *Top TIMES Top and Bottom TIMES Bottom* 3. flip the second fraction - make the 2nd fraction (3/4) look like (4/3) by flipping it 4. multiply the problem through - now multiply the 1st fraction (2/1) TIMES the 2nd fraction (4/3). * 2/1 X 4/3 **TOP TIMES TOP AND BOTTOM TIMES BOTTOM** A.) Multiply two top numbers (numerators) - #2 TIMES #4 is equal to 8 *the top of the fraction is now 8 B.) Multiply two bottom numbers (denominators) - #1 TIMES #3 is equal to 3 *the bottom of the fraction is now 3 C.) The answer to 2 divided by 3/4 is equal to 8/3 - it is the same as saying 2 X 4/3 is equal to 8/3 - because we flipped the 2nd & multiplied 5. Simplify or REDUCE - the fraction 8/3 will not reduce because it is as low as it can be. * since it is an improper fraction (top heavy).....so divide the top # by the bottom # * you have to divide the top # (8) by the bottom # (3) * 3 will go into 8 "2 times (3X2=6)" *you still have some left over (this makes the fraction) - it now looks like 2 2/3 or can be left as 8/3 (2 divided by 3/4 equals 8/3 or 2 2/3)

7/49 simplfy

7/49 1. Simplifying is the same as Reducing 2. You divided the top number by 7 (7/7 = 1) 3. You must also divide the bottom number by 7 (49/7 = 7) 4. your answer to simplifying or reducing the fraction is 1/7
