WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF BRAKE FAILURE

-Downshift to low gear. -Pump the brake pedal fast and hard to build up brake fluid pressure. You will know in three to four pumps if the brakes will work. Do not pump antilock brakes. -Apply the parking brake, but be ready to release it if the car begins to skid.

HOW TO AVOID HYDROPLANING

-Drive slowly. -Have good tire tread. -Have properly inflated tires. -If possible, steer around water.

IN CASE OF STEERING WHEEL FAILURE

-Ease your foot off the accelerator pedal. -Turn on your hazard lights. -Keep your foot off the brake for as long as possible. The vehicle's natural tendency is to continue going straight—braking might cause swerving. -As the vehicle slows, brake gently to bring it to a stop.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF TIRE BLOWOUT

-Hold the steering wheel tightly and steer straight ahead. -Take your foot off the accelerator slowly but don't apply the brakes. -Let the car slow to a stop, completely off the road. -Apply the brakes when the car is almost stopped.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF POWER STEERING FAILURE

-If your engine stalls power steering will be lost, but you will still be able to turn the wheel. The steering wheel may take more force to turn than normal. -Move to the side of the road as safely as possible. -Stop the car. You may have to push the brake pedal hard if your car has power brakes.

IN CASE THE VEHICLE STALLS IN THE FOG

-Move off the roadway as quickly as possible. -Turn on your hazard lights or use flares to warn other drivers. -Move away from the vehicle.

IF YOUR VEHICLE BREAKS DOWN, YOU SHOULD:

-Pull off of the road as far as possible, while still visible -Turn on four-way flashers and open your hood (if not wet out) -Place emergency flares/signs 100 feet around your vehicle

GETTING OUT OF MUD OR SNOW

-Shift to low gear and keep the front wheels straight. -Gently step on the accelerator. -Avoid spinning the wheels. Drive forward as far as possible. -Shift to reverse and slowly back up as far as possible and don't spin the wheels. -Shift to low gear again and drive forward. Repeat this forward-backward rocking motion until the car rolls free. -Put boards or tree branches under the tires in deep mud or snow. -Repeat the steps if necessary.

IN CASE OF DRIVING IN WIND

-Slow down & be alert -Tailwinds push the car and increase its speed. -Headwinds slow the car down. -Crosswinds may cause the car to swerve.

IN CASE OF SKIDDING

-Take your foot off the accelerator. -Don't use your brake. -Turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid.

IN CASE OF DRIVING IN SNOW OR ICE

-Turn on low-beam headlights and windshield wipers. -Drive more SLOWLY and stay farther behind the vehicle ahead. -SLOW to a crawl on ice. -SLOW DOWN as you approach curves and intersections. -Use all-weather radial tires, snow tires, or chains. -Avoid sudden changes in speed and direction.

IN CASE OF DRIVING IN RAIN

-Turn on your headlights -Turn on your windshield wipers -Use your low-beam headlights

IN CASE OF OVERHEATING

-Use low gear in stop-and-go traffic. -Turn off the air-conditioner. -If you are stopped in traffic, briefly put the car in (P) Park and lightly step on the gas to help circulate coolant. -If the temperature light goes on or if the gauge enters the red zone, immediately pull off the road to a safe spot, well away from traffic, and stop the engine.

WHAT TO DO WHEN DRIVING IN FOG

-Use your wipers and defroster as needed for the best view. -Turn on your low-beam headlights. Do not use high-beams—they can actually decrease your visibility. High-beams will reflect back and create glare. -Use fog lights. Fog lights can be mounted on the front of a vehicle to increase visibility. But remember, you should never drive with just your parking or fog lights. -Slow down -Increase your following distance

IN CASE OF A STUCK ACCELERATOR

-Warn other drivers by turning on hazard lights. -Try to drive the car safely off the road. -Turn off the ignition when you no longer need to change direction. -Concentrate on steering and seeing the road -Pump the accelerator and try to clear any obstruction -Shift to neutral
