He may not want his mom to call so that it doesn't appear that he is struggling or want all the attention of Jeffery's cancer it might bring. I think she should so that Steven can get help from school and friends during this time.

No I think that his dad made the wrong decision, because this let Steven think that there was nothing wrong with his brother and that made it even harder for him when he learned that Jeffery has Leukemia.

Steven form of bargaining is with God. He thinks that by making the right promises to God Jeffery will get better. He does this to make himself think that Jeffery will get better even though he might not.

Steven's first flashback about Jeffery is about the time the went to Outer Banks for vacation and Jeffery didn't sleep at all in the car ride there. This shows why Steven is nervous when he sees his brother sleeping in the car. I know this because the text says, "... I saw Jeffery was asleep in the backseat of the car and I started to get nervous."

The second flashback is about Jeffery's generosity. It shows how Jeffery loves Steven and is so thoughtful when it comes to him. Just like in the past, Jeffery brought back Steven a gift from the hospital.
