What was unique about Georgia as a colony?

A labor system. Ship captain paid your voyage to the New World. In exchange, you worked for a certain amount of time. Average length of an indentured servant's contract was 5 years.

Called the troublemakers. Both criticized Puritan officials. R.W. believed in a separation of church and state. A.H. led religious meetings in her home, as a woman, which was illegal.

John Winthrop meant he wanted the Puritans should be the civilization which others should look up to.

New England: soil wasn't great, made money by finishing and producing furniture. Middle Colonies: more land, more farms, produced corn and oats. Southern Colonies: large agricultural flourish, cash crops

Rejected the hard labor required to work on a tobacco plantation. Weather, and indentured servants remained poor after their contracts were over.

Religious revival in the colonies in the 1730's and 40s.

The Mayflower Compact was a set of rules that allowed Jamestown to govern themselves. The Virginia House of Burgesses was the first English government in North America (1619). Both examples of early colonial democracies.

Name the first permanent English colony in North America. Why did it almost fail?

The first permanent English settlement was Jamestown. It almost failed because of the lack of agriculture that they planted. The pilgrims ended up relying on the Native Ameircans for food to get through the winter. "starving time"

Describe the Middle Passage.

The stage of the Atlantic slave trade where millions of enslaved Africans were transported to the Americas. Was often very dangerous, many died.

List two ways The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut established a colonial democracy in Connecticut in 1636.

They created a set of laws. Included senators, legislative branch. Added the idea of separation of branches or powers.

What did William Penn mean when he called Pennsylvania the "Holy Experiment?"

William Penn called Pennsylvania called it the holy experiment because they were allowed for religious freedom in the state.

Why was John Peter Zenger arrested and put on trial in 1735?

Zenger was put on trial after being accused of libel (written statements). Freedom of the press. Zenger won.
