Meeting with the Mentor

A wiser and often older character presents the character with important wisdom. The mentor gives the character tools that he or she needs for success.

The Road Back

Although the shadow is defeated, the hero must return home. Sometimes the road home presents the hero with minor challenges. The hero can easily overcome these challenges. Sometimes, the hero simply just reflects upon the journey he or she had.

The Call to Adventure

An event or character comes along that presents the hero with a quest.

Resurrection

By the time the hero has returned home, he or she has become stronger than ever before. The hero is not the same person that left home before. The hero returns with the power to make the world a better place.

Tests, Allies, and Enemies

The hero faces a variety of tests that increase the hero's strength and prepares the hero for the supreme ordeal. He is faced with enemies but also has allies to back him up.

The Supreme Ordeal

The hero battles and defeats the shadow. At some point in this battle it seems as if the hero has lost, or even died. In the end, the hero is victorious.

Refusal of the Call

The hero is reluctant to go on the quest; the hero cites his or hers own weakness as a reason to not go.

The Ordinary World

The hero lives in a non-adventurous world. The ordinary world is boring to the hero who dreams of adventure

Approaching the Inmost Cave

The hero reaches the most dangerous part of the Journey. Here is when the hero faces the main antagonist, the shadow. While the hero faces his greatest fear, he also proves his or hers worth.

Reward (SEIZING THE SWORD)

The hero receives a reward for defeating the shadow. It's usually something that helps the hero make his world a better place.

Crossing the Threshold

The hero usually faces a minor obstacle as the adventure begins, this obstacle encourages the hero to turn back. (Obstacle called the Threshold Guardian, which defeating him makes the hero stronger and more dedicated to the quest).

Restoring the World

The hero's journey has solved the problem, the world has become a better place.
