Yet, when the germans finally came to Sighet, the citizens of Signet realized he wasn't lying. They finally understood what was to come and that Moishe was telling the truth. This represents the idea that people tend to dismiss the truth and refuse to listen until they are being directly impacted.

Page 32, "I pinched myself: Was I still alive? Was I still awake?" Page 36, "We were incapable of thinking. Our senses were numbed..." These are similar because they both show how he is dissociating from the real life because of how horrible it is.

Why was Elie and his father told to lie about their ages?

Part of the Nazis' "selection" process was to weed out people who could not physically contribute to the German cause. So, if a prisoner was too young (Elie's case) or too old (Elie's father's situation) to be of any value in regards to labor, and were sent to their death. The inmate tells them this so that both of them can stick together, and to prevent them from being apart of the group sent to the crematoria.

The Jews were in denial for a long time, but finally begin to realize their new reality. The person who knocked was an inspector of the hungarian police, a friend of Elie's father, who was there to tell them of danger. Yet, when they opened the window, no one was there. If they had been able to speak to this man, they may have been able to flee.

The prisoners have accepted and adapted to the abusive environment of the camp.

The significance of this quote is that this shows the reades how the prisoners, even after going through a traumatic experience, thank god for keeping them alive. They come to terms that going through these traumatic experiences, despite how gruesome they are, is better than death.

The significance of this use of repetition is that it demonstrates that the author will never forget what he experienced at his time at Auschwitz. Also, "NEVER" has a very strong denotation which demonstrates how this has a long lasting effect on the author's life. Elie is very descriptive, but repeating the phrase Never shall I forget represents that these emotions and feelings with remain in his thoughts forever.

There aren't many nice things and things that will remind you of home in these camps, so even little things like new shoes mean a lot when others have old stuff.
