retrodict

"revNextDefinition: to utilize present information or ideas to infer or explain (a past event or state of affairs)Did You Know?We predict that you will guess the correct origins of retrodict, and chances are we will not contradict you. English speakers had started using predict by at least the late 16th century; it's a word formed by combining prae- (meaning ""before"") and dicere (meaning ""to say""). Since the rough translation of predict is ""to say before,"" it's no surprise that when people in the early 20th century wanted a word for ""predicting"" the past, they created it by combining the prefix for ""backward"" (retro-) with the -dict of predict. Other dicere descendants in English include contradict, benediction, dictate, diction, and dictionary.Learn a new word every day, delivered to your inbox!Your email address SUBSCRIBEExamplesGeologists have retrodicted the positions of the continents millions of years ago.""PhD students in my lab are developing new ways to retrodict maize production through time, drawing on tree-ring data for climatic information...."" — Tim Kohler, quoted in an article at Laboratoryequipment.com, 7 Aug. 2014"

Aug 29, 2016This week's themeWords related to clothing This week's wordstop-hatLincoln in a top hat, 1862Photo: Alexander Gardner/LOC A.Word.A.Daywith Anu GargHave you ever wondered why a piece of clothing for the upper body goes in singular (a shirt), as it should, but clothing for the legs doesn't (a pair of pants)? Well, here's the scoop from pantology.*In the old days, pants were two pieces of clothing, one cylinder for each leg. And that was good enough. A pair is a pair is a pair. No need for fitting rooms. As one of the three basic needs for humanity, clothing has been with us for a long time. And so have the words to describe it. Many of these words are used in a metaphorical sense. This week we'll look at five of them. We'll start at the top and make our way down to the feet.*Pantology is a word to describe a systematic view of all knowledge. For real. I didn't make it out of whole cloth.top-hatth:(TOP-hat) MEANING:noun:1. A man's tall, cylindrical hat.2. An important or high-ranking person.ETYMOLOGY:From the association of a top hat with people

bungalow

British English) a house built all on one level, without stairsHe retired at 70 and moved to a bungalow in Rosecroft Gardens.CultureMany old people live in bungalows because there are no stairs to climb. In Britain, especially in the 1920s, large groups of bungalows were often built together on the edges of towns, or in places where people go to live when they have retired from work, such as the south coast. People who don't like bungalows sometimes describe this as 'bunglaloid growth'. The word bungalow comes from the Hindi name for an old type of house built for Europeans in Bengal.Oxford Collocations Dictionaryadjectivetwo-bedroom, two-bedroomed, etin some Asian countries) a large house, sometimes on more than one level, that is not joined to another house on either sideWord Origin

Marfan Syndrome

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder of the connective tissue.[2] The degree to which people are affected varies. People with Marfan tend to be tall, and thin, with long arms, legs, fingers and toes. They also typically have flexible joints and scoliosis.[2] The most serious complications involve the heart and aorta with an increased risk of mitral valve prolapse and aortic aneurysm.[2][3] Other commonly affected areas include the lungs, eyes, bones and the covering of the spinal cord.[2]Marfan is an autosomal dominant disorder. About 75% of the time the condition is inherited from a parent while 25% of the time it is a new mutation.[2] It involves a mutation to the gene that makes fibrillin which results in abnormal connective tissue.[2] Diagnosis is often based on the Ghent criteria.[4][5]There is no cure for Marfan syndrome. Many people have a normal life expectancy with proper treatment.[2] Management often includes the use of beta blockers such as propranolol or if not tolerated calcium channel blockers or ACE inhibitors.[5][6] Surgery may be required to repair the aorta or replace a heart valve.[6] It is recommended that hard exercise be avoided.[5]
