AO2 VAN YPREN AND BUUNK CRITICISM

Obtained equity scores using questionnaire, social desirability bias, reduces internal validity of study.

AO1 DEFINITION

This theory assumes that people strive for fairness in their relationship. If couples perceive unfairness, they get distressed. Inequity can create dissatisfaction and end a relationship. People who give a lot and receive a little perceive inequity, as do people who give little and receive a lot.

AO2 GENDER BIASED KAHN

This theory does not take into account male and female differences, assumes they are both the same. Kahn- men more likely to focus on norm of equity whereas women focus on norm of equality. ANDROCENTRIC.

AO2 THEORY DOES NOT EXPLAIN HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS

Homosexuals do not engage in traditional roles (man and wife) and therefore costs and rewards might be different. Theory cannot explain every romantic relationship. Thus reliability of this theory is reduced.

AO1 WALSTER'S 4 PRINCIPLES

1. People try to minimise negative experiences and maximise positive ones. 2. Rewards are distributed in relationships in order to ensure fairness and security. 3. The greater the sense of perceived unfairness, the greater the sense of dissatisfaction. 4. As long as the one who puts in more feels a chance of repair, they will endeavor to restore equity.

AO2 HATFIELD

Interviewed 500 students about equity. When these were followed up, most inequitable relationships had ended. Equity is important.
