Essay

A piece of writing that provides your thoughts (Ex) about a subject. All essay you will write will have at least 5 paragraphs: an introduction, 3 body paragraphs ( 11 sentences), and a conclusion. Introduction and conclusion paragraphs will contain 6-8 sentences.

First draft

Also known as the rough draft. The first version of the essay.

Concluding sentence

Also known as transitions. The last sentence in a body paragraph. All explanation does, does not repeat key word, and gives a finish feeling to the paragraph.

Introduction

The first paragraphs in an essay. It includes the thesis, usually the last sentences of the paragraph. The introduction should contain all explanation and begin with general information about a topic, then narrowing to the thesis. Introduction and conclusion paragraphs will contain 6-8 sentences.

Topic sentence

The first sentence in a body paragraph. Must have a subject and opinion for the paragraph. Must have a subject and opinion for the paragraph. Does the same thing that the thesis does for the entire essay.

Concluding paragraph

The last paragraph in the essay. Sums up the ideas, reflect on what was said, provided more explanation regarding your subject. Provide a final personal statement. All explanation and does not include evidence. Do not repeat key words from the paper especially from the thesis.

Pre-writing

The process of getting your evidence down on paper prior to organizing the essay into paragraphs. Must contain the majority of your evidence/ citation

Shaping the essay

The step that is completed after prewriting and before before the first draft of an essay. It is an outline of your thesis, topic sentence, evidence, ad explanation.

Thesis

A sentence with a subject and opinion that can be argued. This comes at the end of the introduction paragraph. Without a solid thesis you can not have a solid essay.

Body paragraph

The middle paragraphs in a essay. They develop and prove the point the writer wants to make, which supports the thesis. These paragraphs must contain: your own quotations in MLA format. Body paragraphs will contain 10-11 sentences.

Brainstorming

Getting initial ideas on paper.

Evidence

Specific details that form the backbone or core of the body paragraphs. Evidence must be from reliable sources and quoted and cited correctly. Synonyms: * facts * specific * support * proof * quotation * paragraphing.

Explanation

The writers opinion or comment about the topic. Explanations consists of the writer's own words and ideas. Must be woven between the evidence to create as positive flow of ideas.
