You will learn in Chapter 3 that residential lighting loads are based on 3 volt-amperes per ft2 (33 volt-amperes per m2). Determine the minimum lighting load required for an area of 186 m2. Do calculations for both feet squared and meters squared so you can se the difference in answers. To convert meters squared to feet squared, refer to table 1-8.

186m x 10.764ft/m =2002ft 2002ft x3= 6006 volt amperes 186m x 33 = 6138 volt amperes

A junction box on a piece of European equipment is marked 200 cm3. Convert this to cubic inches.

200 x 0.06102 = 12.20468

Convert 4500 watts to Btu/hour.

4500 x 3.41214 = 15.354

What is the NEC definition of a qualified person?

A qualified person is "One who has skills and knowledge related to the construction and operation of the electrical equipment and installations and has received safety training to recognize and avoid the hazards."

Explain briefly what an arc flash is.

An arch flash is the explosion that happens when a short circuit or ground fault, from a circuit. it is hotter than the sun and throws tiny hot balls of copper.

What authority enforces the requirements set by the NEC?

Local authorities (building commissioners/directors of development)

Where might you obtain information about on-the-job safety and safety training?

Many places like: Occupational & Safety Health Act, National Fire Protection Association, American Heart Association

What section of the NEC states that all listed or labeled equipment shall be installed or used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling?

NEC 110.3 (B)

What is the purpose of the NEC?

Is it safe practice to use a stepladder in which the spreaders have not been fully locked into position?

No

Does compliance with the NEC always results in a electrical installation that is adequate, safe, and efficient? why?

No. NEC 90.1 (B) states "this code contains provisions that are considered necessary for safety. compliance there with and proper maintenance will result in an installation that is essentially free from hazard but not necessarily efficient, convenient, or adequate for good service or future expansion of electrical use." Some older buildings aren't built, wired, or designed for increase in electrical use thus hazarding fire due to overload or improper use of additional wiring.

Are low-voltage systems totally safe? Explain.

Not necessarily, because the jolt can cause you to jump/pull back and injure yourself or drop some tool that will create an arc flash.

What federal organization dictates requirements for work-related safety issues?

OSHA

What federal organization dictates requirments for work related safety issues?

OSHA

What code sets standards for electrical installation work?

The NEC - National Electrical Code but local and state electrical reg and codes are the minimum requirements

What can you do to reduce or eliminate the possibility of receiving an electric shock when working on electrical circuits?

Turn off the power on the circuit you are working on, tag it, and lock the disconnect in the OFF position

What do the letters UL signify?

Underwriters laboratories

Are you a "qualified person? Explain your answer.

Yes. I have taken the required safety training to follow a journeyman as a shadow capacity and to complete tasks at my skill and ability level.

If the ladder collapses, who is at fault?

You are (Know your tools and how to use them properly)

Name two nationally recognized testing laboratories

intertek testing services, UL (underwriters laboratories), Canadian Standards Association (CSA)

Does the NEC provide minimum or maximum standards?
